Job description

Responsibilities

The School Athletic Trainer works with athletes to prevent injuries, enhance performance, and provide education on nutrition, hygiene, psychology, conditioning, and protective equipment. They develop training programs to prevent injuries, examine athlete injuries, and demonstrate techniques to build strength and avoid future issues.

They serve as the liaison between area athletic programs, physicians, and clinical staff, supporting Carilion’s hallmarks of service excellence and quality. Responsibilities include:

  • Collecting data and performing patient assessments, including height, weight, vital signs, chief complaints, and medication histories.
  • Conducting initial patient evaluations, screening, and reporting findings to the physician; completing requisitions for laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic studies.
  • Administering all prescribed treatments and recommendations by the physician to treat and rehabilitate athletic injuries.
  • Maintaining clean, safe work areas, exam and treatment rooms, x‑ray rooms, and labs; restocking supplies, sterilizing reusable equipment, and disposing of specimens and contaminated waste properly.
  • Providing patient and community education on sports injury prevention and care.
  • Coordinating clinical documentation in the electronic medical record, recording appointments, referrals, and diagnostic studies, and ensuring chart completeness before patient visits.
  • Assisting with clerical duties such as reviewing charts, retrieving missing information, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Fabricating braces and orthotics (DME), applying casts, removing sutures and staples, and performing post‑operative wound assessments.
  • Fitting patient braces, crutches, and assistive devices, and providing gait training for athletes with varied weight‑bearing and neurological status.
  • Demonstrating proper taping, strapping, bracing, and fitting of athletic equipment; covering pre‑season physicals, sports games, and related events under physician supervision.
  • Educating school personnel, student athletes, and guardians about athletic injuries, equipment, nutrition, and exercise programs to achieve optimal performance.
  • Coordinating pre‑ and post‑participation exams and assisting with the acquisition of protective equipment for athletes as needed.
  • Communicating with patients, physicians, coworkers, area coaches, and athletic trainers; maintaining frequent interaction and collaboration.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of newly established sports medicine programs.
  • Acknowledging potential exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials and providing services appropriate for patients of all ages.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a health‑related field.
  • Experience: None required.
  • Licensure & Certification: Licensed Athletic Trainer with the Virginia Department of Health Professions and certification through the National Athletic Training Board of Certification.
  • Life Support: American Heart Association BLS‑HCP required.
  • Minimum Qualifications: Effective interpersonal communication skills (in person and written), proficiency in keyboarding and automated computer systems including electronic medical records, ability to assist or transfer athletes of various weights and heights, ability to stand for long periods, good mobility, and ability to walk long distances.
