How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare

The Certified Athletic Trainer will work with athletes to prevent injury and enhance performance using knowledge of nutrition, hygiene, psychology, conditioning and protective equipment. The Trainer will develop training programs to prevent injuries, examine athletes’ injuries, and provide techniques to build strength and avoid future injury. They act as a point of contact between athletic programs and the physician practice and support Carilion’s hallmarks of service excellence and quality in all duties.

They provide support for clinical and medical staff in the delivery of quality medical care and assist with patient care as directed by the physician within scope of training. Responsibilities include prevention, assessment, treatment (including first aid), and reconditioning of athletic injuries. They collect data and perform patient assessments, record vital signs, etc. They perform initial patient evaluation and screen patients, report findings to physician, and complete requisitions for labs, x‑ray, MRI. They carry out all prescribed treatments and recommendations by the physician, maintain work area, and observe all safety precautions. They also provide patient and community education, serve as liaison among patient, physician, office staff, and school staff, and document patient information in the electronic medical record. They develop and distribute educational materials about injuries, equipment, nutrition, and exercise. Perform patient evaluation during post‑operative phases and provide education on home care, mobility, and exercise. They perform clerical and office functions, review charts before appointments, and provide bracing and orthotic fabrication, casting, wound assessment, and post‑operative care. They fit braces and assist patients with assistive devices, work with schools to demonstrate proper taping, strapping, and fitting of athletic equipment, cover pre‑season physicals, sports games, and events under the supervision of the program physician, and provide education programs to school personnel, athletes, and guardians. They coordinate pre‑ and post‑participation exams and acquire protective equipment for athletes as needed. Frequent communication with physicians, coworkers, coaches, and athletic trainers. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials. Must provide services as appropriate for patients of all ages. Assist in the development and implementation of a newly established sports medicine program.

What We Require
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in a health‑related field required.
Experience
  • None. (Equivalent experience will be considered).
Licensure, certification, and/or registration
  • Licensure as an Athletic Trainer with the Virginia Department of Health Professions and certification through the National Athletic Training Board of Certification required.
Life Support
  • AHA BLS‑HCP required.
Other Minimum Qualifications
  • Effective interpersonal skills to communicate with management, doctors, professional staff, patients, general public, and local schools and sports teams.
  • Keyboarding and utilization of automated computer systems required, including electronic medical records.
  • Must be able to assist with or transfer athletes of varying weight/height.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods, have good mobility skills, and be able to walk long distances.
