Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training or an accredited program.
  • Must provide provisional authorization letter from Virginia Board of Medicine.
  • BOC certification verification must be submitted.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Experience coordinating athletic training services at events preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts initial assessment of an athlete's condition for emergency or ongoing care.
  • Develops a plan of care and monitors outcomes with professional judgment.
  • Oversees athletic training services for tournaments, camps, and other events.
  • Manages inventory, supplies, equipment and other athletic training services.
  • Develops and presents community education on sports medicine topics.
  • Supervises student athletic trainers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job description

The Clinical Outreach Athletic Trainer practices according to the Board of Certification standards of professional practice and complies with all the legal requirements regulating the practice of athletic training. Available to work all sporting events including evening, weekend and holiday hours as required by department leadership including schedule changes due to inclement weather or other unforeseen scheduling conflicts. Assigned hours within shift, starting time or days of work are subject to change based on departmental and/or organizational needs. Available 24/7 to coaches, school administration and department leadership via telephone. Reports to department leadership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assures continued competency of professional performance, knowledge and skill evidenced by professional development and maintaining current knowledge related to all aspects of practice.
  • Expertly conducts an initial assessment of an athlete's training, capabilities, injury or illness in order to provide emergency or continued care, and to determine whether the athlete requires physician intervention for definitive diagnosis and treatment.
  • Establishes a plan of care for athletes and manages the needs of the athlete based on the examination, diagnosis, prognosis, goals and outcomes of the planned interventions for identified impairments through the exercise of discretion and professional judgment.
  • Supervises, plans for and coordinates athletic training services for tournaments, camps, championships, play-offs and other special events.
  • Manages the needs of the athlete and provides athletic training intervention by reviewing, revising, and implementing techniques or discharging athletic training services as deemed appropriate.
  • Responsible for inventory, supplies, equipment and other athletic training services.
  • Develops and presents community education on sports medicine related topics.
  • Supervises the student athletic trainers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
  • Certification by BOC and licensed to practice as an Athletic Trainer in the state of Virginia.
  • Licensure, certification and/or registration with National Athletic Trainers Association Certification.
  • CPR training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’sDegree in Athletic Training or an accredited educational program by the NATA-BOC. Will consider those that meet the qualifications for provisional authorization - BOC certified athletic trainer who has completed the application process for licensure by the Virginia Board of Medicine and has submitted BOC certification verification.
  • Must provide letter of provisional authorization from the Board of Medicine to practice.
  • Provisional authorization incumbents must meet the certification and license requirement within 45 days of hire.
  • Knowledge and experience in the administration of a variety of assessment tools, treatment plans and equipment.
  • Previous experience in independently providing athletic intervention at special events preferred.
  • Knowledge of athletic training treatment and modalities.
  • Previous experience in health care setting preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license required for travel to various satellite locations in the immediate area, and be able to meet the insurance requirements of the hospital.
  • Position is subject to a periodic screening process in compliance with the Code of Virginia and/or other local, state or federal laws and regulation.
  • Certification and the immediate disclosure to CHKD and department management necessary for any convictions or offenses related to crimes against children required upon hire and ongoing.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like. Frequent exposure to communicable disease and moderately adverse working condition due to performance of certain patient care activities.
