Job summary

Boone County Schools is seeking qualified Scholar Substitute Teachers to support students in the Scholars Program across Boone County Schools – on an as-needed basis.

Scholars Substitute Teachers will follow lesson plans, supervise learners, and maintain a safe, structured environment while implementing activities and assignments prepared by regular teachers or program administrators.

Qualifications

• Meet WV Department of Education requirements to serve as a Teacher/substitute teacher.
• Possess or be eligible to obtain the WV substitute teaching permit or authorization.
• Successfully complete all required employment screenings and background checks.
• Ability to work effectively with students of varying ages and educational needs.
• Demonstrate effective communication, organizational, and classroom-management skills.
• Be dependable and available to work on an as-needed basis.

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction and supervision for Scholars Program students.
• Follow lesson plans and program expectations provided by the regularly assigned teacher or program administrator.
• Maintain an orderly, positive, and safe learning environment.
• Provide appropriate academic assistance and enrichment activities to students.
• Monitor student attendance, participation, and behavior.
• Implement classroom and behavior-management strategies.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, and school personnel.
• Follow Boone County Schools policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
• Communicate concerns to the appropriate administrator.

Position Summary

Boone County Schools is seeking qualified Scholar Substitute Teachers to provide instructional support and supervision for students participating in the Scholars Program. Scholar Substitute Teachers will serve on an as‑needed basis when regularly assigned program teachers are unavailable.

The successful candidate will provide a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment while implementing activities, assignments, and instructional plans established for the Scholars Program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide instruction and supervision for students participating in the Scholars Program.
• Follow lesson plans, instructional activities, and program expectations provided by the regularly assigned teacher or program administrator.
• Maintain an orderly, positive, and safe learning environment.
• Provide appropriate academic assistance and enrichment activities to students.
• Monitor student attendance, participation, and behavior.
• Implement appropriate classroom and behavior‑management strategies.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, and school personnel.
• Follow all Boone County Schools policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
• Communicate any significant student, behavioral, safety, or instructional concerns to the appropriate administrator.
• Maintain professional conduct and serve as a positive role model for students.
• Perform other duties related to the Scholars Program as assigned by the building principal or program administrator.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

• Meet all requirements established by the West Virginia Department of Education to serve as a Teacher/substitute teacher.
• Possess or be eligible to obtain the appropriate West Virginia substitute teaching permit or authorization.
• Successfully complete all required employment screenings and background checks.
• Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with students of varying ages, abilities, and educational needs.
• Demonstrate effective communication, organizational, and classroom-management skills.
• Be dependable and available to work on an as‑needed basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous teaching, substitute teaching, tutoring, or educational experience.
• Experience working with students in after‑school, extended-learning, summer, or enrichment programs.
• Familiarity with Boone County Schools instructional and behavioral expectations.

Terms of Employment

Employment will be on an as-needed basis based upon student enrollment, program needs, staff availability, and funding. Workdays and hours may vary depending upon the Scholars Program schedule.

The position does not guarantee a minimum number of workdays or hours.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated by the building principal, program administrator, and/or other designated Boone County Schools administrator in accordance with applicable county procedures.
