Position Description

Advertised Job Summary | Under general supervision, the Scholar Programs Coordinator serves as the primary contact and program advisor for all Carolina and 1801 Scholars in National Fellowships and Scholar Programs, a unit within the nation’s top ranked South Carolina Honors College (SCHC). The coordinator also performs a variety of duties to help provide support to approximately 200 high-achieving scholars who have received the university’s five top merit-based scholarships. The coordinator plans all first-year scholar events in collaboration with student leadership, manages the development and implementation of various other student activities and programs throughout the year, provides holistic advising to scholars in partnership with other team members, advises student organizations as assigned, and collaborates with the Director of Scholar Programs to create an annual communication and assessment plan. Staff members should possess a wide range of intellectual curiosity and a commitment to working with high-achieving students. This position may include additional responsibilities to meet the needs of USC’s most talented students and to support the mission of the overall university.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience | Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 2 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials

Preferred Qualifications | Prior advising with post‑secondary high‑ability students; working knowledge of scholar programs. Some knowledge of USC policies, procedures, and programs is preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities | Applicants must have the ability to function in a fast‑paced, team‑oriented environment. The successful candidate will be well organized, have excellent written and oral communication skills, be able to deal diplomatically with various constituent groups. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Software (Excel, Word and PowerPoint). Possess strong research skills, presentation skills, and problem‑solving skills, as well as strong analytical skills as the ability to interpret information accurately is critical.

Job Duties
  • Carolina and 1801 Scholars Program Administration: Serves as primary contact and program advisor for all Carolina and 1801 Scholars. Partners with Honors Development and the Office of Financial Aid to connect scholars to their respective donors and helps ensure submission of their annual donor notes. Advises Carolina Scholars on appropriate use of enrichment funds and maintains administrative records for compliance and reporting purposes. Prepares an annual report and contributes to the college’s annual planning process. Essential Function: Yes. Percentage of Time: 30.
  • Advisement: Provides holistic advising to all scholars throughout the year. Advises scholars during class‑specific programs such as First‑Year Scholar chats, Sophomore Strategy, Junior Gameplan and Senior Send‑Off. Connects scholars to appropriate campus offices and makes referrals when needed. Updates databases with notes from advising appointments. Encourages all scholars to consider applying for national fellowships. Essential Function: Yes. Percentage of Time: 25.
  • Scholar Programs Event Coordination: Plans and/or participates in scholar program activities that provide an enhanced university experience for the Top Scholar population, including: Stamps, McNair, Carolina, 1801 and Horseshoe Scholars that may occur after hours and on weekends. Plans all first‑year scholar events in partnership with student leadership and advises student organizations as assigned. Essential Function: Yes. Percentage of Time: 20.
  • Strategic Communication and Assessment: Collaborates with the Director of Scholar Programs to develop and implement an annual communication and assessment plan that supports SCHC annual planning, evaluation, and continuous improvement efforts. Leads the administration of assigned surveys, compiling, analyzing, and reporting assessment data, while also advancing strategic communication initiatives through the co‑management of a scholar‑led social media team in partnership with Honors Communications. Develops and coordinates engaging, brand‑aligned content for the weekly Scholar Programs newsletter, ensuring timely and effective communication to the Top Scholar community. Essential Function: Yes. Percentage of Time: 20.
  • Other Duties: Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, in support of other activities of National Fellowships and Scholar Programs and the Honors College. Essential Function: No. Percentage of Time: 5.
