Job summary

Montezuma County is seeking a part-time Landfill Scale Attendant for Fridays and Saturdays with possible additional shifts in Cortez, CO. Under the Office Manager, you will operate the landfill scale, process fees, assist customers, and maintain basic office duties.

You will handle cash, reconcile daily cash, and communicate rules to patrons while ensuring safety and efficiency in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Proficiency with rate tables to assess charges.
• Experience operating a cash register and basic office software (Word/Excel/Access).
• Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Operate landfill scale, computer system, and cash register.
• Calculate and assign correct disposal fees based on approved rate schedules.
• Provide clear direction to landfill patrons on dumping locations.
• Alert Operations Chief or equipment operators of suspicious or special-inspection loads.
• Communicate with patrons regarding unacceptable materials or charges.
• Answer and route incoming phone calls.
• Reconcile daily cash register/box.
• Perform basic office janitorial duties (cleaning, tidying, restocking).
• Calculate weights and charges manually during system outages.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

POSITION TITLE: Landfill Scale Attendant

General Summary

We are seeking a part-time reliable and customer‑focused Landfill Scale Attendant to support daily baling and landfill operations for Fridays and Saturdays with possible pick up shifts. . Under the direction of the Office Manager, this position handles scale operation, ticketing, customer assistance, fee assessment, cash reconciliation, and basic office upkeep.

Essential Functions

• Operate landfill scale, computer system, cash register, and other office equipment
• Calculate and assign correct disposal fees based on approved rate schedules
• Provide clear direction to landfill patrons on proper dumping locations
• Alert Operations Chief or equipment operators of suspicious or special‑inspection loads
• Communicate with patrons regarding unacceptable materials or additional charges
• Answer and route incoming phone calls
• Reconcile daily cash register/box
• Perform basic office janitorial duties (sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, restroom cleaning, trash removal)
• Calculate weights and charges manually during system outages
• Perform additional duties as assigned

Environmental & Physical Requirements

• Exposure to weather, odors, dust, and potentially hazardous or toxic materials
• Office‑based work with periods of standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 40 lbs.
• Frequent communication with customers and staff
• Continuous use of computers and cash handling equipment
• Ability to operate office tools such as printers, 10‑key adding machine, multi‑line phone, filing cabinets, fax machine, photocopier, and dolly

Minimum Qualifications
