Job summary

City Utilities Engineering in Fort Wayne seeks a SCADA System Analyst I – Software Specialist to develop, support, and improve software for industrial control systems powering Fort Wayne's water, sewer, and stormwater operations.

You will collaborate with engineers and operations staff to maintain SCADA applications, databases, dashboards, and data pipelines, while embracing new technologies and ensuring reliable OT infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical or Computer Engineering Technology or approved engineering discipline.
• Equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience.
• At least two years of industrial environment experience with control systems, programming, instrumentation, database management, or process automation.

Responsibilities

• Configure and support SCADA applications, HMIs, interfaces, and industrial platforms with Ignition emphasis.
• Create, maintain, and document scripts and integrations using Python, SQL, C, or related languages.
• Maintain SQL databases, historians, dashboards, and data pipelines.
• Support control-system servers, virtual networks, telemetry, and industrial communications.
• Troubleshoot SCADA connections to PLCs and field devices using logs and trends.

What You'll Do

As the SCADA System Analyst I – Software Specialist, you will help develop, support, and improve the software behind City Utilities' industrial control systems. You will work alongside engineers and operations staff to maintain SCADA applications, databases, process historians, dashboards, data pipelines, and virtualized operational technology infrastructure.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys programming and troubleshooting but also wants to see how their work directly supports critical public infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Configure and support SCADA applications, HMIs, graphical interfaces, and industrial control platforms, with an emphasis on Inductive Automation Ignition.
• Create, maintain, and document custom scripts and software integrations using Python, SQL, C, C++, or related programming languages.
• Maintain SQL databases, process historians, dashboards, reports, historical trends, and data collection or migration pipelines.
• Support control-system servers, virtual networks, telemetry systems, and industrial communications, including Ethernet/IP, Modbus, SNMP, and LAN/WAN connectivity.
• Troubleshoot SCADA connections to PLCs and field devices using alarms, event logs, historical trends, and communication-analysis tools.
• Partner with engineering and operations teams to identify control-system needs, develop solutions, document completed work, and support automation projects.
• Train employees on SCADA interfaces and custom or newly implemented software solutions.
• Evaluate emerging technologies, including AI-enabled software, and assist with their responsible implementation and long‑term management.

What You Bring

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical or Computer Engineering Technology, or another approved engineering discipline from an accredited college or university; or
• An equivalent combination of education and hands‑on experience.
• At least two years of experience in an industrial environment involving industrial control systems, programming, instrumentation, database management, or process automation.

Technical Skills

• Knowledge of industrial control and SCADA platforms; Inductive Automation Ignition experience is preferred.
• Experience with SQL databases, queries, and custom database solutions.
• Ability to read, modify, create, and document scripts using Python, SQL, C, C++, or related languages.
• Understanding of process historians, dashboards, reporting tools, virtual infrastructure, and PLC interfaces.
• Knowledge of industrial communications, including Ethernet/IP, Modbus, SNMP, gateways, routers, and wireless systems.
• Basic understanding of industrial instrumentation used to measure level, flow, pressure, and other process conditions.
• Strong troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and teamwork skills.
• Ability to explain technical information clearly to engineers, operations employees, and vendors.

Preferred Certifications

• Inductive Automation Ignition Core or Gold Certification.
• Candidates without these certifications must have the interest and ability to pursue them during employment.
• A valid Indiana driver's license is required when operating a City vehicle.

Work Environment

This position includes a combination of office‑based computer work and occasional work within active utility facilities. Employees may encounter industrial equipment, electrical systems, chemicals, weather conditions, elevated areas, and moderate noise. The position may occasionally require climbing, kneeling, crouching, or lifting up to 50 pounds.
