Job summary

City of Hutchinson is seeking an Engineering Systems Technician to maintain and calibrate SCADA networks across water and wastewater facilities. Under supervision, you\u2019ll program PLCs, RTUs, and instrumentation, ensuring reliable operation of critical infrastructure.

The role emphasizes hands-on maintenance, troubleshooting, and coordination with GIS and Cityworks teams. A strong electronics background and ability to work with contractors are essential; the city offers competitive benefits

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum 2 years technical training in electronic maintenance is desirable.
• Minimum of 1–2 years related electronics/radio equipment repair experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily inspections and adjustments on instrumentation and control systems used to monitor and operate facilities.
• Test, maintain and calibrate electronic control equipment including PLCs, RTUs and related systems.
• Modify and configure control circuits; support system modifications for temporary operations.
• Coordinate with outside contractors and vendors for installations and maintenance.
• Monitor SCADA systems, prepare reports and manage asset records.
• Work with GIS databases and assist staff with GIS programs.
• Provide software administration support for Cityworks and related systems.

Under the general supervision of the Water Production Supervisor, an Engineering Systems Technician will perform or assist in a variety of responsible duties in the design, programming, testing, maintenance, repair and calibration of the City's SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition) systems.

Essential Functions

• Perform daily inspections and makes necessary adjustments and repairs on all instrumentation and control systems used to monitor and/or operate the Wastewater Treatment facility, Water Treatment Facility; water production stations, pressure stations, water storage tanks and wastewater lift stations;
• Perform functional tests, routine maintenance and preventive care for electronic control equipment which includes programmable logical controllers (PLCs), remote terminal units (RTUs) variable speed drives, switch gear equipment, radio telemetry systems etc. Diagnose, troubleshoot, update, and repair malfunctioning recording and transmitting devices, etc;
• Perform routine calibration and configuration control on electronic equipment; Maintain calibration and system integrity records as required; Perform and monitor installation and/or modifications of instrumentation and control systems for conformance with plans and specifications, and assure proper operation; Modify, design, and change control circuits as required to support additional systems or to sustain temporary operations;
• Provide direction for outside contractors, engineers and vendors for installation and/or specialized control systems maintenance; Inspect contractor/vendor installations for compatibility and functionality with control systems interface;
• Monitor inventory levels, assist in preparations of requisitions and purchase required materials, parts, and services needed for repairs; Monitor performance of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and respond as necessary; Maintain required reports;
• Update the asset management system and review system reports for pending work orders, backlog work request and preventive maintenance schedules; Prepares schematics and records of installed system parameters; Documents system changes, performance and failures as needed;
• Works with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases including water & wastewater systems. Uses & assists other staff with the use of GIS programs.
• Provides software administration through support of Cityworks asset/work management in various City departments. Trains users, answers questions, troubleshoot problems, perform required maintenance and assist in system upgrades.

Requirements

Education

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 2 years technical training in electronic maintenance is desirable.

Experience

• Minimum of one to two years of related experience in electronics and/or radio equipment repair and installation.

Licenses/Certifications

• Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License with a good driving record.
