Strycker's Bay Neighborhood Council in New York City seeks a full-time VISTA to support the SBNC VISTA Y4 Project Sustainability Coordinator initiative. The role focuses on establishing sustainable fundraising and resource development to empower families and students toward academic success.
The coordinator will craft fundraising plans, pursue grant opportunities, secure pro-bono services, and help the local team build capacity to advocate for themselves and their children in education.
Strycker's Bay Neighborhood Council is a grassroots, community-based organization serving the Upper West Side and Harlem. Our mission is to give families and children access to the tools, resources, and knowledge that will empower them to break the cycle of poverty and improve their quality of life. We serve as a neighborhood anchor operating with an open-door policy, staffed by professionals who live in and know our community, with firsthand understanding of the ongoing needs of low-income families, parents, and children working toward school success. Our services include after-school programming, tutoring, summer camp, youth workforce development, eviction prevention assistance, and family support. While the Upper West Side as a whole is viewed as affluent, there is significant and often overlooked poverty within its neighborhoods. Our community is home to more than 32,000 children under age 18; 11.4% of families live below the federal poverty level and 25% are food insecure. The children facing the greatest economic hardship also face the steepest barriers to accessing local educational resources, and too many low-income students experience poor academic outcomes as a result. Strycker's Bay works to close that gap by meeting families where they are and connecting them directly to the supports they need to succeed.
The SBNC Project Sustainability Coordinator will help establish a sustainable framework for ongoing resource and fund development to support the efforts to engage and educate community members on the need for and benefits of educational initiatives that support academic success; you will assist in the development of a resource and fundraising plan to support the mission of the this education initiative, including identifying potential fundraising methods and grant opportunities, securing pro-bono services, and soliciting in‑kind donations. This VISTA will build agency capacity by establishing funding streams to support the project as well as equipping the community team with the skills, tools, and resources to advocate for themselves, their children, and their community & achieve academic excellence.
