Job summary

Precision Castparts is seeking an entry-level sawing operator to set up and operate metal band and abrasive saws for cutting stock to precise dimensions.

Responsibilities include reading specifications, transporting stock, installing blades, adjusting speeds, and verifying measurements. The role requires basic math, attention to safety rules, and the ability to follow written instructions. Training provided, with room for growth.

Qualifications

  • One-year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Read job traveler for specifications (material, type, size) of stock and dimensions to cut.
  • Obtain and transfer stock to machine using forklift or overhead crane.
  • Install saw blade and set blade tension and cutting speed for the operation.
  • Set blade angle to obtain the desired cuts.
  • Set stops and guides to control cut dimensions.
  • Position and secure stock against stops or in feeding device.
  • Start flow of coolant and monitor cutting area.
  • Operate machine and inspect work for conformance to specs.
  • Mark data on workpiece and prepare data sheets of cut material.
  • Replace finished work and replace defective blades or wheels.
  • Stamp identifying data on the workpiece; perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Position Summary: Level One: Sets up and operates metal band and abrasive sawing machines to cut metal stock to dimensions by performing the following duties with minimal supervision.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Reads job traveler for specifications such as material, type, and size of stock, and dimensions to be cut.
  • Obtains and transfers stock to machine by forklift or overhead crane.
  • Installs saw blade and sets blade tension and cutting speed for specified operation.
  • Sets saw blade angle to obtain desired angle cuts.
  • Sets stops and guides to control dimension of cut.
  • Positions and secures stock against stops or in feeding device using straps or chains.
  • Turns valve to start flow of coolant against cutting area.
  • Starts machine and observes operation.
  • Measures work for conformance to specifications.
  • Marks identifying data on workpiece.
  • Replaces finished work on pallets or barrels.
  • Replaces defective cutting blade or wheel.
  • Prepares data sheets of cut material and remnants.
  • Steel stamping letters and numbers on work piece by hammer blow.
  • Other duties assigned
Required Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups or employees of Company.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Experience & Education
