Job summary

Precision Castparts in California, South Gate seeks an entry-level Level One operator to run metal band and abrasive sawing machines, cutting stock to exact dimensions with minimal supervision.

You will read travelers, load stock with a forklift or crane, install blades, set tension and speed, and verify measurements against specifications on the job. This on-site role requires a one-year certificate or equivalent experience and emphasizes safety and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Read job traveler for specifications (material, type, size).
  • Move stock to machine using forklift or overhead crane.
  • Install saw blade; set tension and cutting speed.
  • Set blade angle for desired cuts.
  • Set stops and guides to control dimensions.
  • Secure stock against stops or feeding device.
  • Start coolant flow and machine; observe operation.
  • Measure work to ensure spec conformance.
  • Mark data on workpiece; replace finished work.
  • Replace worn blade or wheel.
  • Prepare data sheets of cuts; perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Position Summary: Level One: Sets up and operates metal band and abrasive sawing machines to cut metal stock to dimensions by performing the following duties with minimal supervision.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Reads job traveler for specifications such as material, type, and size of stock, and dimensions to be cut.
  • Obtains and transfers stock to machine by forklift or overhead crane.
  • Installs saw blade and sets blade tension and cutting speed for specified operation.
  • Sets saw blade angle to obtain desired angle cuts.
  • Sets stops and guides to control dimension of cut.
  • Positions and secures stock against stops or in feeding device using straps or chains.
  • Turns valve to start flow of coolant against cutting area.
  • Starts machine and observes operation.
  • Measures work for conformance to specifications.
  • Marks identifying data on workpiece.
  • Replaces finished work on pallets or barrels.
  • Replaces defective cutting blade or wheel.
  • Prepares data sheets of cut material and remnants.
  • Steel stamping letters and numbers on work piece by hammer blow.
  • Other duties assigned

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Experience & Education
  • One-year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
