Job summary

NORC at the University of Chicago seeks a Data Scientist I to join the Health Sciences Department to support hospital discharge data processing across states and harmonize files into a uniform format. Proficiency in SAS is required; R or Python experience is a plus.

Prior work with healthcare/claims data and strong documentation are preferred. The Data Scientist I supports research and data-driven decision making, collecting, managing, and interpreting data to deliver insights for clients.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in quantitative fields; advanced degree preferred.
• Proficiency in data management and data processing.
• 4 years of experience with large data sets and statistical programming.
• Strong foundation in statistics, mathematics, and data science.
• Advanced SAS, including SAS macros.
• Experience with SQL, Python, R, Tableau, Hadoop, Hive, MapReduce or similar.
• Healthcare or administrative claims data experience preferred.
• Strong problem solving and quantitative skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication including technical writing.
• Proficiency with MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Collect, clean, transform, validate, and harmonize data from diverse sources.
• Identify trends and data quality issues; communicate findings to teams.
• Develop reports, dashboards, tables, charts, and visualizations.
• Create, document, manage, and maintain databases, data systems, and dictionaries.
• Support data storage optimization and data management procedures.
• Collaborate with research teams, project leaders, and clients on analytics needs.
• Contribute to proposal development, including drafting technical sections.
