Job summary

NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking a Data Scientist I to join the Health Sciences Department. The role focuses on hospital discharge data processing across states, data harmonization, and producing reports and visualizations.

Proficiency in SAS is required; R or Python knowledge is welcome. Hybrid work in DC or Chicago with six in-office days per month is expected. Strong documentation and collaboration are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in quantitative social sciences, public health, statistics, biostatistics, health informatics, math, data science, or computer science (or related field) required.
• Advanced degree preferred.
• 4 years of experience with large data sets and statistical/analytic programming.
• Strong foundation in statistics, mathematics, and data science.
• Advanced SAS proficiency, including SAS macros.
• Experience with SQL, Python, R, Tableau, Hadoop, Hive, MapReduce or other large data systems is welcome but not essential.
• Prior work with healthcare or administrative claims data is strongly preferred.
• Strong problem solving, quantitative analysis, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Collect, clean, transform, validate, and harmonize data from diverse sources.
• Identify trends, data quality issues, and communicate findings to project teams.
• Develop reports, dashboards, tables, charts, and visualizations.
• Create and maintain databases, data systems, and data dictionaries.
• Support data storage optimization and data management procedures.
• Collaborate with research teams and clients to understand analytical needs.
• Contribute to proposal development with technical or analytical sections.
