Job summary

The City of Montgomery, AL is seeking a Sanitation Truck Driver to operate garbage packers and sanitation vehicles and to lead a small crew for daily routes in the Sanitation Department. The role requires a Class B CDL in Alabama, a history of safe driving, and willingness to handle emergency overtime, nights, and weekend shifts.

As the lead worker, you will set the pace, ensure safety, communicate with customers, and perform required vehicle inspections and basic maintenance.

Qualifications

• Experience operating equipment such as garbage packers, sanitation vehicles, buses, tractor-trailers, and similar vehicles.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Commercial Driver’s License Class B or higher.
• Must be willing to work overtime, nights, and weekends for emergencies and special events.

Job description

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to operate garbage packers, truck-mounted trash loaders, and other refuse collection vehicles to service the Sanitation Department’s customers. Sanitation Truck Drivers serve as the leader of a crew consisting of a driver and two service maintenance workers; drivers are responsible for setting the pace of work and ensuring the safety of the crew and the public. Major work responsibilities may include operating sanitation vehicles, serving as the lead worker for work crews, performing preventative maintenance checks, communicating with customers and the public, and assisting in the performance of manual labor. Although routes are assigned by supervisors, Sanitation Truck Drivers are responsible for ensuring the assigned route is completed in a timely manner. Work is performed with limited immediate supervision and requires drivers to exercise independent judgment while on routes. Supervision is received from the Refuse Collection Supervisor.

Six (6) months of experience operating equipment such as garbage packers, sanitation vehicles, buses, tractor-trailers, and other vehicles requiring a Class B CDL or higher. Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Commercial Driver’s License Class B or higher.

NOTE: Qualifying education, training, and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered. Must work overtime, nights, and weekends for emergencies and special events. Must possess and maintain an insurable driving record and a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
