Job summary

The City of Winslow is seeking a Sanitation Operator to assist with the operation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s transfer station. This at-will position requires attendance at the designated work location and includes a six-month probationary period for regular status.

Qualifications

Job description

Under general supervision, the Sanitation Operator performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work in the operation maintenance and repair of the City’s transfer station. This position is a tentative “At-Will” appointment and subject to a probationary period of six (6) months from the date of hire. Upon successful completion of a probationary period, a non-management employee shall be granted regular status in the classification in which the probationary period is served.

Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Opens and closes transfer station gates according to schedule; prepares facility for operation by conducting daily safety inspections; prepares facility for closing in accordance with established procedures.
  • Supervises the separation of trash by Transfer Station patrons; explains Transfer Station procedures to the public; monitors and screens cargo to prevent the disposal of prohibited materials and ensure safety procedures are followed.
  • Inspects and collects appropriate dump vouchers from Transfer Station customers; accounts for fees by checking transfer station vouchers; files all documents and vouchers received throughout the day.
  • Completes all forms and enters computer information as required; maintains records of Transfer Station operations.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and neatness of the Transfer Station facility; assists with snow plowing and snow removal operations when required.
  • Sanitizes and cleans equipment, tools and work areas as required; performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment; inspects fluid levels and tire pressure on vehicles and makes adjustments as needed.
  • Operates specialized equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, and loaders.
  • Performs necessary painting, yard work, janitorial, and housekeeping duties as assigned.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge of:
  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in the maintenance, construction, and repair of City Transfer station.
  • Records maintenance practices.
  • Customer service principles, practices, and etiquette.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, practices, and equipment.
Skill in:
  • Operating a variety of tools and equipment.
  • Typing and accurately entering data into computer systems.
  • Following written and verbal instructions.
  • Maintaining accurate records and logs.
  • Completing accurate mathematic calculations.
  • Working effectively with little or no direct supervision.
  • Performing scheduled maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.

  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

High school diploma or GED equivalent AND one (1) year of experience in sanitation or waste disposal which includes operating heavy equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.


Work is performed at the City transfer station and requires exposure to potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, hazardous chemicals, and infectious diseases. May be required to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
