Job summary

Bexar County seeks a Sanitarian to inspect on-site sewage facilities (OSSF), process inspection and licensing paperwork, schedule inspections, and investigate nuisance complaints in line with state and county regulations.

The role requires a Bachelor's degree with two years in OSSF or equivalent; candidate must become State Certified OSSF Designated Representative within one year, and will enforce regulations, update records, and interact with homeowners and installers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 2 years OSSF experience or equivalent.
  • Must become State Certified OSSF Designated Representative within 1 year.
  • Knowledge of OSSF regulations and sanitary engineering principles.
  • Proficient with surveying equipment and PC usage.
  • Valid driver's license; background check and pre-employment screening; may require overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect OSSFs for compliance with state and county regulations.
  • Process OSSF inspection and licensing documentation.
  • Schedule inspections and meet with installers/homeowners.
  • Investigate nuisance environmental health and safety complaints.
  • Enforce OSSF regulations related to inspections and concerns.
  • Update OSSF records (location, completion, violations).

Job Title Sanitarian - C Pay Rate Min to Mid Range $21.79 - $25.61 Time Type Full time

Summary

Under direction, is responsible for inspecting on-site sewage facilities (OSSF); processes inspection and licensing documentation; schedules inspection appointments; investigates nuisance complaints; enforces OSSF regulations, and performs related duties as required

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Inspect on-site sewage facilities for compliance with State and County OSSF regulations
  • Processes OSSF inspection and licensing documentation
  • Schedules inspection appointments and meets with installers and homeowners
  • Investigates environmental health and safety nuisance complaints received from the general public
  • Enforces OSSF regulations related to on-site sewage facility complaints
  • Updates OSSF computer records on septic system information such as location, completion, registration, and violations
  • Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of experience in the OSSF field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must become a State Certified OSSF Designated Representative within one (1) year of employment
  • Knowledge of State and County OSSF regulations; knowledge of basic sanitary engineering principles and methods; knowledge of environmental health and safety standards and practices
  • Skill in operating basic surveying equipment; skill in operating personal computer
  • Ability to perceive or visualize spatial relationships of the plane and solid objects; ability to effectively respond to customers inquires and complaints; ability to operate basic surveying equipment; ability to operate a personal computer; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, outside agencies, contractors and the public
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation
  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
Working Environment and Physical Demands
  • Working conditions are primarily outdoors
  • The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks (i.e. cramped work areas), which requires following basic safety precautions
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperature variations (ie. rainy and icy conditions), rough terrain, poisonous plants, dirt, dust, fumes, vapor, smoke, unpleasant odors, hazardous materials, flammable liquids, sewage, damp surfaces, insect and/or animal bites
  • Frequently moves equipment weighing up to 15 pounds
  • Will frequently communicate with co-workers; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • Constantly positions self to perform essential functions
  • Constantly operates tools and equipment
