Position Overview
Temu US is seeking an experienced Sales & Use Tax Manager / Senior Manager to join its U.S. Tax team. This role will serve as a key subject matter expert on U.S. indirect tax matters, with a primary focus on sales and use tax research, planning, business advisory, and audit controversy.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical knowledge of U.S. state and local indirect taxes, hands‑on experience supporting e-commerce, online marketplace, or other high-volume digital/retail businesses, and meaningful experience managing state and local tax audits and controversy matters.
This role will work closely with Tax, Finance, Legal, Product, Operations, Engineering, and other business teams to evaluate tax implications of new and evolving business models and develop practical, scalable solutions in a fast‑growing e‑commerce environment.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a key Sales & Use Tax subject matter expert for Temu's U.S. business and provide technical guidance on complex state and local indirect tax matters.
- Research and analyze U.S. sales and use tax laws, regulations, administrative guidance, and emerging developments, including issues affecting e-commerce platforms and marketplace facilitators.
- Evaluate taxability, sourcing, nexus, marketplace facilitator obligations, exemptions, credits/refunds, and other complex sales and use tax issues across U.S. jurisdictions.
- Lead and support sales and use tax audits, inquiries, notices, and controversy matters with state and local taxing authorities, including developing audit strategies, responding to information requests, reviewing data samples, preparing technical positions, and negotiating audit resolutions.
- Partner with external advisors and internal stakeholders in managing indirect tax audits and other tax authority interactions.
- Develop defensible technical positions and prepare tax research memoranda, position papers, risk assessments, and documentation supporting the Company’s indirect tax positions.
- Monitor legislative, regulatory, and administrative developments and assess their potential impact on Temu’s business.
- Partner closely with Finance, and other cross-functional teams to translate complex tax requirements into practical business and system requirements.
- Support the design and implementation of scalable tax processes, controls, and technology solutions appropriate for a high-volume e‑commerce platform.
- Identify opportunities for tax planning, process improvement, risk mitigation, and automation while balancing technical compliance requirements with operational considerations.
- Support sales and use tax compliance matters as needed, including reviewing complex filing positions, adjustments, reconciliations, and other issues requiring technical judgment.
- Assist with special projects involving other U.S. indirect taxes, fees, and state or local transaction-based taxes as business needs evolve.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Business, or a related field. CPA, JD, MST, or other relevant professional qualification is preferred.
- Approximately 8+ years of relevant U.S. state and local indirect tax experience for Manager candidates.
- Strong technical knowledge of U.S. sales and use tax, including nexus, sourcing, taxability, marketplace facilitator rules, exemptions, and state/local jurisdictional differences.
- E-commerce, online marketplace, digital platform, retail, or similarly high-volume transaction business experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with sales and use tax audits and controversy, including direct interaction with state or local taxing authorities and management of complex audit requests.
- Experience researching complex SALT issues and developing well-supported, practical technical positions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex tax concepts to non-tax stakeholders.
- Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and rapidly evolving environment.
- Experience at a Big Four accounting firm, major law firm, large multinational company, e-commerce platform, marketplace, or major retailer is preferred.
- Experience with tax technology, data analytics, automation, or implementation of indirect tax systems is a plus.
Compensation and Benefits
- Our compensation structure is designed to align with the cost of labor in various geographic markets across the US. The total salary for this position ranges from $85k to $260k annually, based on job-related factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, competencies and location.
