Job description

The Sales Associate is a part-time or full-time, on-site position based in Washington, D.C. This role supports retail operations that help fund the Association’s educational and preservation work. The Sales Associate provides welcoming and knowledgeable customer experience, assists visitors with product selections, processes transactions accurately, and shares information about merchandise and the Association’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

• Welcome and assist customers by providing courteous, informed, and mission-aligned service.
• Process sales transactions accurately using point-of-sale systems and follow established cash-handling procedures.
• Maintain organized, attractive merchandise displays and ensure products are properly stocked and presented.
• Monitor inventory levels, restock merchandise, and support basic inventory control processes.
• Respond to customer inquiries and service issues in a professional and timely manner.
• Collaborate with colleagues to support sales goals, daily operations, promotions, events, and seasonal campaigns.
• Support retail initiatives connected to Association products, including the official White House Ornament.

Qualifications

• Previous customer service, retail sales, museum shop, or nonprofit retail experience preferred.
• Experience using registers, point-of-sale systems, or other sales platforms with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including active listening and a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
• Ability to maintain organized displays, restock products, monitor inventory, and follow established procedures.
• Reliable, punctual, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced customer-facing environment.
• Flexibility to work a schedule that may include weekends, holidays, peak seasons, promotions, and special events.
• Interest in American history, culture, and the mission of the White House Historical Association is highly beneficial.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; a bachelor’s degree in business, history, or a related field, or equivalent job experience, is preferred.

All proceeds from the sale of the Association’s books and products are used to fund the acquisition of historic furnishings and artwork for the permanent White House Collection, assist in the preservation of public rooms, and further its educational mission.
