Job summary

RJM Construction in the Twin Cities area seeks a Safety Director to lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive safety program across the organization. You will partner with field teams, project leadership, clients, and regulators to enhance accountability and safety performance.

The role requires 10+ years in construction, strong OSHA knowledge, and ability to drive continuous improvement through data-driven decisions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Construction Management, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered
• 10+ years of construction industry experience preferred
• 5+ years managing a structured safety program, preferably with general or specialty contractor
• Strong knowledge of OSHA requirements and applicable regulations
• Experience developing safety programs, training, inspections, and investigations
• Experience managing employees and/or third-party safety providers
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication

About the Role

The Safety Director will lead the development and implementation of RJM’s company-wide safety program, helping strengthen safety culture, accountability, training, and compliance across the organization.

This is a highly visible leadership role working closely with field teams, project leadership, preconstruction, management, clients, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies.

The ideal candidate is a proactive, collaborative safety leader who can build credibility across the organization while balancing compliance, risk management, employee engagement, and practical jobsite safety.

What You’ll Do

Safety Leadership & Culture

• Develop and communicate RJM’s safety vision, objectives, policies, and procedures
• Lead company-wide safety initiatives and establish meaningful safety KPIs
• Build strong relationships with field teams, project leadership, and management
• Promote a culture of accountability, learning, mentoring, and employee engagement
• Incorporate whole-person safety, equity, inclusion, and mental health into safety initiatives

Training & Compliance

• Lead safety training programs for management, field staff, preconstruction, and project teams
• Ensure compliance with OSHA and applicable federal, state, and local regulations
• Partner with clients, subcontractors, inspectors, and regulatory agencies on safety matters
• Interact with OSHA representatives during site visits and investigations
• Review and provide input on crane pick plans

Risk Management & Continuous Improvement

• Lead incident investigations and develop corrective and preventive actions
• Conduct and/or oversee safety inspections and hazard assessments
• Analyze inspection and incident data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement
• Develop annual safety and health plans and budgets
• Use data and sound judgment to evaluate risks and drive continuous improvement

Team Leadership

• Lead and develop the safety team
• Hire, coach, mentor, and manage safety staff
• Build a high-performing, service-oriented team
• Partner across departments to address safety concerns and resolve issues

Additional Responsibilities

• Manage workers’ compensation and vehicle claims
• Oversee return-to-work and restricted-duty programs
• Lead or participate in the Safety Committee
• Manage safety incentive programs
• Oversee the motor vehicle records program

What We’re Looking For

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Construction Management, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered
• 10+ years of construction industry experience (preferred)
• 5+ years managing a structured safety program, preferably with a general or specialty contractor (preferred)
• Strong knowledge of construction-related OSHA requirements and applicable regulations
• Experience developing and implementing safety programs, training, inspections, and incident investigations
• Experience managing employees and/or third-party safety providers
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Strong organizational, analytical, and decision-making skills
• Valid driver’s license

Preferred

• Professional safety certification such as CSP or OSHA 500
• Experience incorporating whole-person safety principles into safety programs
• Experience within a self-performing general contractor or specialty contractor environment
