Job summary

General Motors in Grand Rapids, MI, is seeking a Workplace Safety Subject-Matter Expert to partner with site leadership and UAW to maintain regulatory compliance and drive data-driven risk reduction.

You will own safety system elements, conduct audits, lead training, manage records in Intelex and SharePoint, and investigate incidents across shifts to strengthen safety culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related technical discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with workplace safety processes and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for facilitation, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to work independently and coordinate with UAW teams.
  • Manufacturing experience and experience in a union environment.
  • Proficient computer skills and ability to manage multiple safety initiatives.

  • Develop and monitor safety audits, inspections, and regulatory readiness.

This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Grand Rapids facility on a full-time basis.

The Role

Serve as a trusted Workplace Safety subject-matter expert and practical partner to site leadership, operations, employees, UAW representatives, and support functions. Help the site maintain regulatory and GM Workplace Safety compliance while improving safety culture, identifying hazards, and delivering data-driven risk reduction.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
  • Serve as a trusted Workplace Safety resource, partnering with plant leadership, employees, UAW representatives, and cross-functional teams to promote a safe work environment.
  • Provide technical safety guidance and regulatory compliance support while building strong working relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • Own and maintain assigned Workplace Safety System elements, GMS safety modules, audits, documentation, and corrective action tracking processes.
  • Develop, conduct, and monitor safety audits, inspections, and compliance reviews to ensure ongoing regulatory and internal readiness.
  • Manage safety records, reporting, regulatory postings, and documentation using systems such as Intelex and SharePoint.
  • Investigate workplace accidents, injuries, and safety concerns, identifying root causes and implementing effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Analyze safety data and trends to identify risks, reduce hazards, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Lead and deliver safety training programs for leaders, supervisors, employees, and safety committees to strengthen safety awareness and accountability.
  • Facilitate and/or support safety committees, Plant Safety Review Boards, and cross-functional discussions to support a proactive safety culture and risk reduction efforts.
  • Administer assigned safety programs and services, including reporting, equipment reviews, athletic trainer program coordination, and on-call safety support across shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree Occupational Safety/Industrial Hygiene/ technical discipline or relevant certifications or equivalent experience
  • Familiarity with workplace safety processes
  • Strong interpersonal skills in facilitation, negotiation, and conflict resolution
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and work to plan with UAW team
  • Manufacturing Experience
  • Experience in union environment
  • Can manage up, down, and across levels and functions
  • Well-developed computer skills
  • Must be able to work on any shift and weekends/holidays as needed
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Bachelors degree in EHS
  • EHS related certifications or credentials (OSHA 30 General Industry, OSHA 30 Construction, GSP, CSP, etc.)
  • Experience in high-volume environment
  • Experience working in Intelex
  • Experience using SharePoint
  • Experience working with Regulatory Agencies such as MIOSHA, OSHA, EPA, etc.
