Job Summary
The PSM Coordinator manages and maintains the facilities Process Safety Management program in compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 and EPA' 40 CFR Part 68 (Risk Management Program), and applicable industry standards. The PSM Coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for PSM / RMP program elements, audits, and regulatory inspections.
Position Overview
The Bay Springs, MS facility uses anhydrous ammonia to chill and freeze products as a part of the facilities refrigeration system. The site has a sufficient quantity of ammonia to fall under both OSHA and EPA standards for the safe use of this highly hazardous chemical and this position plays a critical role in meeting our compliance requirements. The PSM Coordinator is an important part of the facilities EHS Team and will work closely with the Safety Manager, Refrigeration Manager, Refrigeration Operators, as well as Third Party Consultants and Contractors. This is an excellent foundational role for someone looking to build a career in industrial safety, food manufacturing, or engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage PSM and RMP requirements through the APSM program (software).
- Maintain and update Process Safety Information (PSI) for covered processes.
- Coordinate Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) — scheduling, facilitation support, and revalidation cycles.
- Manage Mechanical Integrity (MI) program: inspection/test schedules, deficiency tracking, and closure verification.
- Develop, review, and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Coordinate Management of Change (MOC) reviews and pre-startup safety reviews (PSSRs).
- Track and support incident investigation follow-up and corrective action closure.
- Maintain training records for PSM-covered employees and contractors.
- Assist with the preparation of the site Hazard Assessment and RMP submissions and 5-year updates.
- Support internal/external PSM audits (3-year compliance audit cycle) and regulatory inspections (OSHA, EPA, state agencies).
- Maintain emergency response coordination related to covered chemicals (e.g., anhydrous ammonia) to include annual meetings with local responding agencies.
- Track hot work permits, contractor safety compliance, and employee participation program elements.
- Assist the site Safety Manager as needed. This position will require assistance in site safety functions. Examples include:
- Assistance in updating safety programs.
- Assistance with employee training and Alchemy Learning Plans and reports.
- Performing safety audits at the facility.
- Assistance developing training schedules, training materials, and training performance reports.
Education Requirement
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
- Familiarity or internship experience within food manufacturing or poultry processing.
- Prior experience with Ammonia Refrigeration Systems.
- Basic exposure to OSHA 1910.119 or EPA RMP standards.
- Basic understanding of how to read P&IDs or engineering drawings.
- Previous experience with APSM or similar PSM or CMMS Management Software.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to comprehend and understand regulatory or technical standards and communicate requirements in a way that is understandable to stakeholders.
- The successful candidate will be proficient in technical writing skills and basic math.
- Ability to quickly understand and use various software applications.
- Ability to use standard Microsoft Office applications.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- The PSM Coordinator job will primarily involve working in an office setting but will also require working in outdoor and facility processing settings.
- Production environments include wet, humid, extremely cold (freezers), and conditions requiring personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to walk the plant floor, climb stairs or maintenance ladders, and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
