Job summary

Kiewit is seeking a Safety Manager to drive safety programs on heavy civil and transportation projects in Northern California. You will develop plans, lead trainings, and oversee field safety while ensuring regulatory compliance for staff, subcontractors, and consultants on site.

Qualifications

• Formal safety training totaling at least 24 hours per year with competency in four areas

Position Overview

Safety Managers at Kiewit are integral in ensuring “Nobody Gets Hurt”. We hire people passionate about safety who will create, support, and audit our program which reinforces our commitment. Working closely with project teams, Safety Managers develop and implement protocols, conduct training programs, and monitor compliance with regulations and company policies. This role will be based on a construction project and will be involved in both safety management and field oversight to ensure safety for staff and craft employees, subcontractors, and consultants supporting the project.

District Overview

Kiewit’s Northern California District is one of Kiewit’s leading infrastructure districts specializing in various types of work in the heavy civil, power, transportation, and water resource markets. Although most of our work is regionally based in Northern California, we also pursue various projects across the west coast. Location

This position will be located on one of our project sites, which may be located in the SF Bay area or Sacramento, CA area.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement comprehensive safety plans and procedures specific to heavy civil, transportation, and water resource projects.
• Ensure that safety protocols are aligned with regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and Kiewit’s safety standards.
• Conduct regular site inspections to identify potential hazards and assess safety risks.

Training and Education

• Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees and subcontractors. Provide guidance on safety‑related certifications and qualifications required for specific job roles.
• Promote a culture of safety awareness and accountability across all levels of the organization.

Incident Management and Investigation

• Lead investigations into safety incidents, near misses, and accidents.
• Analyze root causes of incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Ensure timely reporting of all safety incidents in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.

Regulatory Compliance

• Stay informed about changes in safety regulations and standards applicable to heavy civil, transportation, and water resource construction.
• Maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory agencies. Coordinate with regulatory authorities during inspections and audits.

Safety Performance Monitoring

• Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure safety performance on projects.
• Conduct regular assessments and audits to evaluate adherence to safety standards and identify areas for improvement.
• Provide timely and accurate safety reports to project management and senior leadership.

Qualifications

• Education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field. Years of experience will be considered in lieu.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction safety management, ideally with a focus on heavy civil, transportation and/or water resource projects.
• Craft experience highly preferred.
• 30‑hour OSHA construction safety class or equivalent within the last 5 years
• Professional certification in safety management, specifically CHST, Required. CSP, EM385,CPR/First Aid, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification and OSHA/MSHA instructor certifications are preferred.
• CHST is a nice‑to‑have, but not required. Same with all professional certifications.
• Degree and OSHA 30 are nice to have, but we should prioritize craft experience first.
• An average of at least 24 hours of formal safety training each year for the past 5 years with training for competent person status in at least Four (4) of the following competencies: Excavation; Scaffolding; Fall protection; Hazardous energy; Confined space; Health hazard recognition, evaluation and control of chemical, physical and biological agents; Personal protective equipment and clothing to include selection, use and maintenance.
• In‑depth knowledge of OSHA regulations and other relevant safety standards. Strong communication, leadership, and problem‑solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of a safety program on projects of increasing complexity.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Good attention to detail, with the ability to recognize discrepancies.
• Strong work ethic - Willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
• Willingness to travel and relocate to project sites as needed.

Base Compensation: $125,000/yr - $155,000/yr ** This position may qualify for a cost‑of‑living adjustment added to base salary for employees based in select Northern California locations. (Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
