Job summary

MatPel Builders is seeking an experienced Safety Manager to lead our company-wide safety program and support safe, compliant operations across active jobsites in the San Francisco Bay Area. This hands-on role partners with superintendents, project teams, and subcontractors to identify hazards, provide training, investigate incidents, and enforce safety expectations.

Qualifications

• At least five years of construction safety experience.
• Strong knowledge of OSHA/Cal/OSHA regulations.
• Experience conducting inspections, investigations, and safety training.
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification required.
• First Aid/CPR certification required or obtained after hire.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred in related field.
• Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel 10–20% domestically.

Responsibilities

• Lead Injury and Illness Prevention Program, safety policies, and training.
• Monitor OSHA/Cal/OSHA compliance across sites.
• Conduct jobsite safety inspections and follow up on corrective actions.
• Ensure safety equipment, signage, and emergency supplies are in place.
• Inspect PPE and equipment for safe operation.
• Review JHAs, pre-task plans, and subcontractor safety docs.
• Lead new-hire and subcontractor safety orientations and toolbox talks.
• Coordinate incident reporting and OSHA inspections responses.
• Maintain OSHA logs, training records, and safety documentation.
• Track safety trends and advise leadership on improvements.

Job description

MatPel is seeking an experienced Safety Manager to lead our company-wide safety program and support safe, compliant operations across our active jobsites. This is a hands-on role that works closely with superintendents, project teams, employees, and subcontractors to identify hazards, provide training, investigate incidents, and ensure safety expectations are consistently followed.

The ideal candidate has strong construction safety experience, a practical understanding of field operations, and the confidence to address concerns directly. This position is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and requires regular local jobsite visits and approximately 10%-20% domestic travel.

Main Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and administer the company’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program and related safety policies.
• Monitor compliance with federal OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and company safety requirements.
• Conduct regular jobsite safety inspections, document findings, and follow up on corrective actions.
• Confirm jobsites are properly set up with all required safety equipment, signage, postings, emergency supplies, and protective measures before work begins and throughout the project.
• Inspect tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to confirm they are in safe working condition, appropriate for the work being performed, and used properly.
• Partner with superintendents and project teams to identify hazards and plan for high-risk work.
• Review Job Hazard Analyses, pre-task plans, and subcontractor safety documentation before high-risk work begins.
• Review project-specific safety plans, site logistics, and emergency procedures, and coordinate required drills.
• Lead new-hire and subcontractor safety orientations, toolbox talks, and required safety training.
• Track employee safety certifications, training requirements, and renewal dates.
• Review subcontractor safety qualifications and documentation before work begins, monitor jobsite compliance, and work with project teams to correct unsafe conditions or practices.
• Investigate injuries, incidents, near misses, property damage, and safety concerns; identify root causes and ensure corrective actions are completed.
• Coordinate incident reporting and follow-up with Human Resources, leadership, insurance representatives, and third-party safety partners.
• Serve as the company’s primary contact during Cal/OSHA inspections and coordinate responses to citations, corrective actions, and regulatory requests.
• Maintain OSHA logs, inspection reports, training records, incident documentation, and other required safety records.
• Track safety trends and provide regular updates and recommendations to leadership.
• Work with field leadership and Human Resources to address repeated safety violations and ensure safety expectations are consistently enforced.
• Stay current on regulatory changes and construction-industry safety practices.
• Exercise stop-work authority when an imminent hazard or serious safety concern is identified.

Required Experience, Traits & Skills

• At least five years of construction safety experience, preferably with a general contractor.
• Strong knowledge of OSHA and Cal/OSHA construction safety regulations.
• Experience conducting jobsite inspections, incident investigations, and safety training.
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification required.
• First Aid/CPR certification required or must be obtained after hire.
• CHST, CSP, Certified Safety Manager Construction (CSMC), or a similar safety certification preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, construction management, or a related field preferred.
• Bilingual English and Spanish skills strongly preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regularly between jobsites.
• Willingness and ability to travel domestically approximately 10%-20% of the time, including occasional overnight travel.

• Physical strength and stamina, ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50lbs.
• Manual dexterity and multi-limb coordination, ability to handle, feel, lift, operate, and move objects, tools, or controls.
• Excellent vision and depth perception.
• Ability to work in a construction environment.
• Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, dig, go up and down stairs and ladders, crouch, crawl, and lay down.
• Exposure to heat and/or cold, and inclement weather.
• Exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
