The Safety Engineer ensures compliance with OSHA Process Safety Management standards, OSHA 29 CFR requirements, and DOD 4145.26M, while driving a strong safety culture through training, auditing, and effective communication across all functional groups.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve health and safety programs that support safety, production, quality, and cost goals across the facility.

  • Manage, coordinate, and implement all 14 elements of the OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) standard, maintaining full regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee and audit site safety practices, facilities, and protocols to ensure ongoing compliance with OSHA 29 CFR and DOD 4145.26M requirements.
  • Ensure company compliance with DOD 4145.26M, including the development and maintenance of comprehensive site safety plans.
  • Prepare and maintain site safety plans that incorporate CAD models, evidence, and supporting information to document hazards and controls.
  • Lead and participate in incident investigations and root cause analyses, documenting findings and driving corrective and preventive actions.
  • Plan, develop, and deliver effective employee safety training programs, including environmental health and health and safety topics.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of the site, facilities, and processes, and follow up on corrective actions to closure.
  • Perform calculations and analysis related to explosive quantities, potential hazards, and safe operating limits within designated areas.
  • Generate detailed safety reports and documentation, including compliance reports, audit findings, and PHA documentation.
  • Collaborate closely with R&D, Manufacturing, Operations, Quality, and other cross-functional teams to integrate safety into process and product design.
  • Work regularly with inspectors, manufacturing teams, and supplier quality engineering (SQE) to address safety concerns and improvements.
  • Manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines and supporting new product and process initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively across different functional groups, presenting safety findings, recommendations, and training in a clear and engaging manner.
  • Support and participate in exciting new product initiatives involving cutting-edge technologies such as drones, counter-UAV systems, and medium-caliber products, ensuring safety is embedded in all stages.
  • Work extended hours when necessary to meet critical deadlines, complete investigations, or support time-sensitive safety initiatives.
Essential Skills
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing health and safety programs in a manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM), including managing and coordinating all 14 elements.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and documenting Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) for new and existing processes.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR requirements and their application in a manufacturing setting.
  • Strong knowledge of DOD 4145.26M compliance requirements and experience applying them to site safety plans and operations.
  • Experience in preparing and delivering effective employee safety training programs.
  • Ability to conduct safety audits of sites, facilities, and protocols, and to follow up with appropriate corrective actions.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex safety information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Effective interpersonal and presentation skills to influence and engage cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated time management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended hours when needed to meet deadlines or support critical safety activities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with a focus in Occupational Safety, Industrial Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • Alternatively, 5 or more years of equivalent experience in a similar managerial-level role within a manufacturing facility.
  • Knowledge and practical application of occupational safety principles in industrial and manufacturing environments.
  • Experience in industrial engineering, plant design, or plant layout as it relates to safety and process flow.
  • Experience with Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) methodologies and documentation tools.

  • OSHA 30-hour training or similar safety certification is beneficial.
  • Interest in and comfort with working around defense-related products such as training rounds, grenades, and ammunition, with a focus on safe manufacturing processes.
  • Desire to grow within a safety-focused organization that emphasizes continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Interest in supporting innovative technologies such as drones, counter-UAV systems, and medium-caliber products from a safety perspective.
Work Environment
  • This role operates in a clean, modern manufacturing environment that produces specialized training rounds and related products for commercial and government customers. The position follows a 9/80 work schedule, typically running from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a one-hour lunch on standard days, and 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on working Fridays, with every other Friday off. There is some flexibility to shift start and end times by up to an hour, provided the schedule remains consistent. The Safety Engineer works as part of a growing engineering team, reporting into a mechanical engineering function and collaborating closely with a group of manufacturing engineers. The role is highly cross-functional and involves regular coordination with R&D, Manufacturing, Operations, Quality, inspectors, and the supplier quality engineering team, rather than being siloed to a single department. The environment emphasizes stability, with long-term contracts and strong business growth, and offers a growth mindset with opportunities to expand responsibilities as the team grows. The organization supports professional development, including tuition reimbursement for employees and their families, and encourages engagement with cutting-edge product initiatives that incorporate advanced technologies.
