Job summary

Amsted Rail is seeking a Safety Engineer to lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of workplace safety programs at the manufacturing facility.

You will perform inspections, hazard assessments, incident investigations, corrective actions, safety training, and OSHA compliance, collaborating with operations, maintenance, engineering, and supervisors to reduce risk and improve safety performance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
  • 3–5 years of safety experience in manufacturing, foundry, heavy industrial, or related environment.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, hazard recognition, incident investigation, and corrective actions.
  • ASP, GSP, OSHA 30-hour, or similar safety credential preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with operations, maintenance, engineering, supervisors and hourly employees to improve safety.

Responsibilities

  • Own the implementation and maintenance of facility safety programs, procedures, and initiatives.
  • Conduct routine workplace inspections, safety observations, and hazard assessments.
  • Investigate incidents and track corrective actions to completion.
  • Lead OSHA compliance activities, documentation, recordkeeping, and gap follow-up.
  • Develop, update, and deliver employee safety training on required OSHA topics.
  • Lead audits, safety walks, risk assessments, and corrective action reviews.
  • Coach employees and supervisors on hazard recognition and safe work practices.
  • Prepare safety reports, metrics, inspection summaries, and corrective action updates.
  • Coordinate emergency response activities and follow-up investigations.
  • Maintain awareness of applicable safety regulations and company safety standards.

Job description

The Safety Engineer is responsible for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of workplace safety programs for the manufacturing facility. The Safety Engineer owns day-to-day safety program execution, including inspections, hazard assessments, incident investigations, corrective action tracking, safety training, and compliance activities to help ensure work practices, equipment, and facility conditions meet OSHA requirements and company safety standards. This role works closely with operations, maintenance, engineering, supervisors, and employees to identify risks, implement practical solutions, reduce exposure, and improve overall safety performance.

What you will do:
  • Own the implementation and maintenance of facility safety programs, procedures, and initiatives.
  • Conduct routine workplace inspections, safety observations, and hazard assessments to identify unsafe conditions and at-risk behaviors.
  • Works with supervision and operations teams to investigate incidents, determine contributing factors, and track corrective actions to completion.
  • Lead OSHA compliance activities, including safety inspections, documentation, recordkeeping, and follow-up on identified gaps.
  • Develop, updates, and deliver employee safety training on required OSHA topics and company safety procedures.
  • Lead audits, safety walks, risk assessments, and corrective action reviews to support continuous improvement.
  • Coach employees and supervisors on hazard recognition, safe work practices, and use of safety procedures.
  • Prepare safety reports, metrics, inspection summaries, and corrective action updates for review by management.
  • Respond to employee safety concerns and evaluate practical solutions to reduce risk.
  • Coordinate emergency response activities, incident reporting, and follow-up investigations as assigned.
  • Maintain awareness of applicable workplace safety regulations, industry practices, and internal safety standards.
Job Knowledge/Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related technical field is required.
  • 3-5 years of safety experience in a manufacturing, foundry, heavy industrial, or related environment.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, hazard recognition, incident investigation, corrective action processes, and safety training practices.
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), OSHA 30-hour, or similar safety credential is preferred.
  • Demonstrates sound problem-solving, analytical, communication, and organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively with operations, maintenance, engineering, supervisors, and hourly employees to implement safety improvements.
  • Communicates safety expectations and procedures clearly to employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications and basic safety data tracking, reporting, and documentation systems.
  • Responds quickly and professionally to safety concerns, incidents, and emergency situations.
Key Challenges:

Ability to own and drive facility safety programs while influencing safe work practices, engaging supervisors and employees in hazard recognition, and implementing practical corrective actions that reduce exposures throughout the facility.
