Job summary

Sargent Corporation is seeking a Safety Director in Orono, Maine to provide strategic safety leadership across the organization. This hands-on role integrates regulatory expertise with practical construction operations knowledge and requires regular travel.

As part of the senior leadership team, you will develop comprehensive health and safety programs, lead the Safety Strategic Plan, and collaborate with operations and HR to protect workers and uphold safety culture.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; safety-related education preferred.
  • Experience in heavy construction, earthwork, or related industries.
  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, MUTCD, and FMCSR regulations.
  • OSHA 30‑Hour certification.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Excellent listening, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
  • Ability to travel regularly to project sites across multiple states.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, oversee, and implement company health and safety programs.
  • Lead and monitor the Safety Strategic Plan.
  • Partner with operations leadership to ensure safe, compliant project execution.
  • Collaborate with HR on injuries, workers' compensation, and return-to-work processes.
  • Develop site-specific safety plans and safe work procedures.
  • Oversee safety documentation, compliance, and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate safety orientation, training, certifications, and records.
  • Support weekly safety meetings across project sites.
  • Review incidents and drive thorough investigations and corrective actions.
  • Manage workers' compensation claims and related insurance programs.
  • Monitor EMR, OSHA logs, and incident rates.

As a member of the senior leadership team, the Safety Director provides strategic oversight for all safety initiatives across the organization, ensuring compliance with OSHA, MSHA, and other regulatory requirements while fostering a safety‑first culture. This position partners closely with operations, human resources, and field leadership to develop and implement comprehensive health and safety programs that protect employees, support operational excellence, and reinforce Sargent Corporation's commitment to workplace safety. The successful candidate will be a hands‑on leader who combines regulatory expertise with a practical understanding of heavy construction operations and is willing to travel regularly to support projects and operations throughout Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Virginia, and North Carolina.

Requirements of the Safety Director

Responsibilities of the Safety Director
  • Develop, maintain, and oversee implementation of company health and safety programs
  • Lead and monitor the company's Safety Strategic Plan
  • Partner with operations leadership to support safe and compliant project execution
  • Collaborate with Human Resources on employee injuries, workers' compensation, and return‑to‑work processes
  • Develop site‑specific safety plans and safe work procedures
  • Oversee safety documentation, regulatory compliance, and reporting requirements
  • Coordinate employee safety orientation, training, certifications, and record‑keeping
  • Support and monitor weekly safety meetings across project sites
  • Review incidents and ensure thorough investigations and corrective actions
  • Manage workers' compensation claims and related insurance programs
  • Monitor key safety metrics, including EMR, OSHA logs, recordable incidents, and lost‑time rates
  • Conduct job‑site safety inspections and serve as a safety resource for field operations
  • Participate in project planning to identify and address safety requirements
  • Lead safety committees, stand‑downs, and accident investigation activities
  • Participate in industry safety organizations and professional development opportunities
  • Oversee selection, availability, and proper use of safety equipment
  • Foster continuous improvement and accountability throughout the organization
