Job summary

A leading construction firm based in California is seeking a Safety Intern to support the Safety Manager on various projects. The intern will assist with daily safety activities and collaborate with project teams to ensure adherence to health and safety plans. Ideal candidates are pursuing a degree in Safety and Occupational Health, possess basic knowledge of safety principles, and are proficient in software such as Microsoft Office and Procore. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential. This position may require travel to construction sites.

Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of Safety and Environmental principles.
  • Working towards a relevant degree with a minimum of 2 years’ education.
  • Basic understanding of Heavy Construction & Earthwork.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Safety Manager with inspections and documentation.

Job description

The Safety Intern works under the supervision of the Safety Manager on one or more of Sargent’s projects. This role provides hands‑on exposure to daily operations in the Heavy Construction and Earthwork field. Strong leadership and relationship‑building skills are important, as the intern collaborates with Sargent employee‑owners both in the office and the field to support project‑specific health and safety plans. Responsibilities include working on large construction sites as well as assisting the Safety Manager and Safety Specialists with daily safety and health activities. The intern will work closely with the on‑site Safety Specialist, project teams, general contractors, and field representatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Daily/weekly travel to projects with overnight stays as necessary.
  • Assist Safey Manager and Safety Specialists with conducting and documenting inspections including positive and negative observations.
  • Work with General Contractors and On‑Site Safety Representatives to address safety concerns.
  • Attend all on‑site safety meetings
  • Upload safety documents to Procore or other software application.
  • Assist in maintaining safety records, including pre‑task plans, Job Hazard Analyses, training records, toolbox meetings, the OSHA 300 log, SDS and chemical inventory sheets, incident investigations and metrics.
  • Assist with developing toolbox talks related to Sargent.
  • Assist with reviewing and updating Sargent’s policies and procedures.
  • Assist with creating, planning, and conducting Sargent safety trainings.
  • Assist with new hire safety orientation.
  • Participate in hand‑off and strategy meetings for new projects.
  • Participate in incident investigation including “root cause” analysis.
  • Participate in regional safety committees.
  • Use of various software applications (PlanIT, Procore, HCSS)
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Basic knowledge of Safety and Environmental principles
  • Working towards a Four‑year Safety and Occupational Health/Construction type degree, with a minimum of 2 years’ education
  • Basic understanding of Heavy Construction & Earthwork.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record is required.

  • Ability to travel if needed
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow and enforce all applicable safety standards at all times.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Stand, sit, or walk frequently and for long durations. This job operates in an office environment and in the field. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, scanners, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
  • Manual dexterity and the ability to use hands and arms to grasp, reach for, handle, and assemble or manipulate objects.
  • Lift and carry materials and tools weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Climb up and down ladders, scaffolds, and other objects to inspect all areas of work sites.
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl in construction areas, including confined spaces.
  • 20/40 vision, with or without corrective lenses.
  • Hear (naturally or with correction) on sites where the hearing of backup alarms or other sounds may be required.
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties safely and effectively for up to 12 hours a day in hot and cold weather conditions.
