About the Opportunity
We are partnering with an established and growing construction organization seeking an experienced, hands‑on Safety Director to lead and strengthen safety initiatives across a diverse portfolio of commercial construction and heavy civil/infrastructure projects.
This is an exciting opportunity for a proactive safety professional who thrives in the field, enjoys working directly with construction crews, and takes pride in creating a culture where safety is a shared responsibility.
We are looking for a DOER, not a delegator. The ideal candidate is someone who leads by example, regularly walks active jobsites, builds strong relationships with field personnel, and takes a proactive approach to identifying and resolving safety concerns.
This individual will have the autonomy to drive safety initiatives, improve existing processes, and make a measurable impact across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee company‑wide safety programs across commercial construction, heavy civil, and infrastructure operations.
- Maintain a consistent, visible presence at active jobsites, working directly with superintendents, foremen, and field crews to promote safe work practices.
- Conduct routine jobsite inspections, safety audits, hazard assessments, and compliance reviews.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve safety policies, procedures, training programs, and preventative measures.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, MOSHA, and all applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations.
- Lead accident and incident investigations, root‑cause analyses, reporting, and corrective‑action initiatives.
- Oversee workers' compensation matters and coordinate appropriate responses to workplace injuries and incidents.
- Deliver safety training, toolbox talks, educational sessions, and ongoing field coaching.
- Identify potential hazards related to equipment, fall protection, traffic control, and active construction operations.
- Collaborate with project managers and field leadership to address safety concerns while supporting operational efficiency.
- Mentor and provide guidance to additional safety personnel while remaining actively involved in day‑to‑day field operations.
- Maintain accurate safety documentation, inspection reports, and compliance records using digital reporting tools.
- Evaluate emerging safety practices, technologies, and training opportunities to continuously strengthen company‑wide safety performance.
- Foster a positive, accountable safety culture built on communication, education, prevention, and employee engagement.
Qualifications & Experience
- 7–10+ years of progressive construction safety experience, including significant hands‑on field involvement.
- OSHA 30 and OSHA 500 certifications required.
- Strong experience in general contracting, heavy civil, highway, or infrastructure construction.
- Experience supporting commercial and vertical construction projects is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in jobsite inspections, hazard identification, incident investigations, and corrective‑action planning.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA/MOSHA regulations and construction safety standards.
- Experience developing and delivering safety training programs and working directly with construction crews.
- First Aid/CPR certification and traffic control/MOT training or certification required.
- Knowledge of fall protection, equipment safety, and construction‑related risk management.
- Experience supporting workers' compensation and injury management processes.
- Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence employees at all organizational levels.
- Comfortable utilizing Microsoft Office, electronic safety reporting platforms, and digital documentation tools.
- Ability to travel between regional jobsites and occasionally support evening, overnight, or weekend operations.
- Bachelor's degree preferred but not required; relevant construction safety experience is highly valued.
What Makes Someone Successful in This Role?
- Hands‑On Leadership: You prefer being on a jobsite, engaging with crews, and solving problems firsthand rather than managing safety exclusively from behind a desk.
- Relationship Builder: You know how to earn the respect of field personnel and communicate safety expectations without creating an enforcement‑only environment.
- Proactive Mindset: You identify risks before they become incidents and consistently look for ways to improve safety performance.
- Ownership & Accountability: You take initiative, follow through, and are confident making decisions and driving meaningful change.
- Adaptability: You are comfortable supporting multiple projects, balancing priorities, and working across different construction environments.
- Continuous Improvement: You stay informed on evolving safety regulations, training methods, and industry best practices.
- Competitive base salary of $140,000 – $180,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
- Comprehensive medical and prescription coverage with traditional copay and HSA plan options.
- Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) options.
- Voluntary dental and vision coverage.
- Employer-provided basic life and AD&D insurance, with additional voluntary coverage options.
- Short-term and long-term disability coverage options.
- Voluntary accident and critical illness insurance.
- Paid time off, including personal leave, sick and safe leave, and paid holidays.
- Company-provided vehicle and gas card.
- Professional development and continuing education opportunities.
