Job summary

UVA Community Health in Manassas is seeking a Safety Attendant to provide one-on-one observation of patients, ensuring safety and adherence to care standards. Ideal candidates will hold a High School Diploma and possess excellent communication and observational skills.

This role will assist in patient care, document vital signs, and foster positive relationships in the healthcare team. Previous hospital experience is preferred but not mandatory.

The position includes medium to heavy physical demands and may require working with elderly patients.

Qualifications

Job Summary

The Safety Attendant provides one-on-one observation of selected patients for the purpose of identifying behaviors which are potentially hazardous to self or others in accordance with facility policies and procedures; reports needs and concerns to licensed nurse.

Patient Care
  • Assists/provides patient care throughout the entire patient experience under the direct supervision of the physician and/or the registered nurse.
  • Assists in room turnaround, including appropriate cleaning of equipment, supplies, and environment.
  • Organizes supplies and equipment as needed.
Communication
  • Obtains and documents vital signs as prescribed.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with team members.
  • Resolves conflicts independently as appropriate.
Nursing Expertise
  • Understands concepts of sterile and non-sterile techniques.
  • Administers medication as prescribed by the physician appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Adheres to safety measures.

Additional duties may be assigned.

Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience: Previous hospital experience preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.
  • Licensure: N/A
  • Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Ability to successfully complete generic and department-specific skills validation and competency testing. Knowledge of guidelines for infection control, body substance precautions, patient safety, and body mechanics. Maintains acceptable standards set by those guidelines. Completes a de-escalation class within 90 days of hire.
  • Additional Skills/Requirements Preferred: Ability to work with elderly patients or act as a companion.
Physical Demands

Medium to Heavy Physical Demand: The job requires standing and walking constantly and frequently bending/stooping, frequent repetitive body movements. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment.
