Job description

NYC Department of Transportation - Industrial Hygienist

The NYC Department of Transportation is seeking an Industrial Hygienist to join the Training and Development Unit under Human Resources and Facility Management. Reporting to the Director of Training, the successful candidate will serve as a Safety & Equipment Training Specialist, responsible for delivering mandated safety compliance and equipment training programs across the agency.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Delivering annual safety training for field employees on topics such as Right-to-Know, Personal Protective Equipment, Hearing Conservation, Workplace Violence, Mobile Equipment safety, and Bloodborne Pathogens.
  2. Designing and delivering certificate of fitness test prep courses, safety compliance presentations, and training exercises using adult learning principles.
  3. Providing powered industrial truck training, supporting forklift trainers, and observing various equipment and safety trainings.
  4. Assessing training needs, evaluating training impact, and preparing training materials and reports.
  5. Conducting field observations and training needs assessments when not engaged in training activities.
  6. Maintaining flexibility in work schedule, including nights and early mornings.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, including 28 semester credits in industrial hygiene, environmental health science, occupational health science, or safety engineering; or
  • Baccalaureate degree with 28 semester credits in physical or natural sciences, engineering, or toxicology plus one year of relevant full-time experience; or
  • Two years of full-time relevant work experience with a baccalaureate degree; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience, with specific credit substitutions outlined.

Additionally, candidates must possess a valid NY State Motor Vehicle Driver License and, for Level II placement, one year of relevant work experience in health and safety hazard evaluation and control.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience in adult education, training techniques, or K-12 instruction.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and writing skills.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and online platforms like Zoom or WebEx.
  • Knowledge of federal and NY State health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Valid NYS driver's license.
