About the Department

The Environmental Health and Safety Center staff provides consultative and technical support, training and direction for regulatory compliance and effective program development to University faculty, staff, students and visitors. The Laboratory Safety Section provides safety services to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control laboratory related concerns that include the following: exposure and accident investigation and reporting of hazardous materials, including chemical, biological, ionizing radiation, physical, or environmental hazards, maintaining of laboratory materials and equipment, inventories, decontamination and hazardous waste management, emergency equipment functionality, availability of appropriate fir extinguisher, autoclave safety, risk assessment for research laboratory, inspection, training and drills for laboratories with high level of hazardous materials and more.

University Safety Advisor Team ( USAT ): The USAT aims to enhance safety by identifying and minimizing hazards in labs, ensuring compliance with regulations and University standards. USAT conducts inspections to verify lab personnel’s compliance with training requirements, proper use of engineering and administrative controls, adherence to work practices, utilization of personal protective equipment ( PPE ), safe operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, effective management of hazardous chemicals, and understanding of emergency procedures. Additionally , USAT collaborates with lab personnel to address specific hazards, fostering a hazard-free work environment.

We are seeking a proactive and passionate EH&S Program Specialist to support our university’s Safety Advisor Program. This vital role will put you at the forefront of ensuring the safety and compliance of cutting-edge laboratory environments.


What You’ll Do

As an integral part of the Environmental Health & Safety ( EHS ) Department, you will:

  • Lead Laboratory Safety Inspections: Conduct in-depth inspections of research labs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations and university standards.
  • Drive Risk Mitigation: Assess and minimize risks from chemical, biological, radiological, fire, and environmental hazards through inspections, hazard assessments, and collaborative solutions.
  • Partner with Researchers: Work closely with Principal Investigators and lab personnel to implement corrective actions, improve safety practices, and support a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Educate and Empower: Design and deliver impactful training sessions on laboratory safety, emergency response, hazard communication, ergonomics, and more.
  • Respond to Emergencies: Be part of the critical response team for hazardous material spills and urgent EHS incidents.
  • Champion Compliance: Interpret and apply regulations from OSHA , EPA , and funding agencies while maintaining detailed records and contributing to regulatory reporting.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
  • The ability to develop and deliver accurate, clear, and complete technical reports and provide recommendations in support of programs.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of applicable local, state, federal and funding agency requirements associated with chemical, biological, radiation, electrical and fire safety, and environmental hazardous materials.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to interface with investigators on resolution of concerns related to modes of transmission and other criteria that determine the hazard category of a hazardous agent.
  • Must be able to assist with emergency response, carry response equipment over 30 lbs.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety including but not limited to fume hoods and laboratory ventilation, high energy equipment, emergency equipment, personal protective equipment for ready identification of workplace hazards.
  • Frequent walking inspections of ½ mile up to a mile or more in a day while carrying a laptop or tablet device.
  • Frequent bending, squatting, reaching to obtain access to hard to reach components of equipment.
  • Lifting the 30 lbs. mercury vacuum on/off the truck and delivering it up stairs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Physical Science, Chemical Science, Environmental Science/ Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline with successful completion of several chemical courses (general chemistry, inorganic and organic chemistry, physical chemistry) and one year experience in the application of laboratory safety.
