Job summary

City of Portland, Oregon, is seeking a detail-oriented professional to coordinate Safe Routes to School circulation strategies and engage school districts, internal partners, and community stakeholders. You will help refine the priority network, evaluate potential projects, and push forward standardized safety approaches across school areas.

The role supports collaboration across PBOT’s Mobility and Safety Programs and requires in-person reporting and school site visits from the Portland

Job Appointment: Full-Time
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:30 am‑5 pm. An alternate schedule may be available.
Hybrid/work location: This role will report to The Portland Building 1120 SW 5th Avenue, Portland OR 97204 for in‑person work. School site visits will be required.

• Coordinate Safe Routes to School circulation strategy by aligning infrastructure, policies, and safety treatments that improve school area conditions, including lower speeds and consistent countermeasures.
• Engage school districts, internal partners, and school community stakeholders to improve school area circulation safety through site observations, school access planning, and infrastructure installations, including pilot projects.
• Collaborate with internal team to refine the Safe Routes to School priority network and evaluate potential projects.
• Advance standardised approaches to school area safety, including mapping, updating and maintaining inventories, and process improvements.

About the Division:

The Mobility and Safety Programs (MSP) Division is located within PBOT’s Policy, Planning and Projects group. The Division works to make streets safer and increase the number of people walking, bicycling, and taking transit; community‑facing programs are central to this goal.

About Safe Routes to School

Our Safe Routes to School program focuses on helping kids and their families walk, bike, and roll to and from school and around their neighborhoods. We use infrastructure improvements, engagement, and education to improve safety, decrease congestion, reduce climate impacts, and encourage physical activity. The Safe Routes to School program supports over 100 schools within five school districts.

The Safe Routes to School team works closely with the Vision Zero team to advance a shared goal of creating a transportation system where everyone can travel safely. It is Portland’s goal to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets. Both programs use a Safe System Approach to traffic safety. This approach anticipates human mistakes through five layers of redundancy – safe speeds, safe streets, safe people, safe vehicles, and post‑crash response – so human mistakes do not lead to serious injury or death. Vision Zero is Portland's goal to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets.

Applicants must specifically address and demonstrate in their resume and supplemental question responses how their education, training and/or experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications:

1. Experience planning and/or designing multimodal infrastructure projects.
2. Experience applying effective project management including organising, directing, motivating, and engaging stakeholders.
3. Experience coordinating and communicating with diverse groups of stakeholders for program implementation such as, other government bureaus or agencies, school districts, nonprofit or community organisations, and members of the public.
4. Knowledge of transportation demand management concepts and/or behaviour change strategies in the context of non‑driving modes such as bicycling, walking, transit, and rolling/scooting.
5. Ability to engage with communities of colour and people traditionally underrepresented in local decision‑making; facilitate inclusive outreach and engagement; communicate cross‑culturally.

Although not required, you may have one or more of the following:

• Ability to communicate in Spanish.
• Ability to create maps in GIS.

This position is eligible for Language Pay Differential for qualifying employees.
