Position Summary
The Painter will prepare the truck for paint by sanding, grinding, waxing, greasing, and applying body filler. They must inspect the truck for flaws, dents, or imperfections and compare them to the spec book to ensure standards are met. They will be expected to maintain the condition and quality of the tools.
Essential Functions
- Be efficient in tools/equipment to sand, grind, and apply body filler to the apparatus to prepare for paint.
- Dry and wet sand the paint on the body of the fire apparatus.
- Mask off parts of the raw truck body and complete final preparations for it to be painted.
- Compare to spec book and follow guidelines to best prepare the body.
- Perform both steps of buffing the apparatus: smooth, shine, and polish the body.
- Wipe down the exterior of the fire truck with wax and grease to improve visual appeal.
- Inspect for flaws, dents, or imperfections on the truck’s body.
- Clean the exterior of the fire truck and remove compounds as needed to prepare for customer inspection.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as required by management to meet departmental needs.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Education, and/or Experience
- High school diploma or GED.
- Strong mechanical and technical ability.
- Associate’s degree in autobody preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in autobody preferred.
- Manufacturing experience preferred.
Skills
- Ability to read and work from blueprints or spec books.
- Ability to read and understand a tape measure accurately.
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
- Mathematical skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
Abilities
- Identify quality issues, recognize changes within the production process, and adjust as needed.
- Perform simple computer tasks to obtain information or changes related to the build process and troubleshoot.
- Prioritize work and multitask while adhering to deadlines.
- Work with minimal supervision in a team environment.
- Understand and follow all safety policies to promote a safe working environment.
