Job description

Position Summary

The Painter will prepare the truck for paint by sanding, grinding, waxing, greasing, and applying body filler. They must inspect the truck for flaws, dents, or imperfections and compare them to the spec book to ensure standards are met. They will be expected to maintain the condition and quality of tools.

Essential Functions
  • Use tools/equipment to sand, grind, and apply body filler to the apparatus to prepare for paint.
  • Sand the paint on the body of the fire apparatus (dry and wet).
  • Mask off parts of the raw truck body and complete final preparations for it to be painted.
  • Compare to spec book and follow guidelines to best prepare the body.
  • Perform buffing steps to smooth, shine, and polish the body.
  • Wipe down the exterior of the fire truck with wax and grease to make the product more visually appealing.
  • Inspect for flaws, dents, or imperfections on the truck’s body.
  • Cleans exterior of the fire truck and removes compounds as needed to make the fire truck ready for customer inspection.
  • Perform any other duties and responsibilities as required by management.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Strong mechanical and technical ability.
  • Associate’s degree in autobody preferred.
  • 2+ years of autobody experience preferred; manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints/spec books.
  • Ability to read and understand a tape measure accurately.
  • Follow written and verbal directions.
  • Able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Identify quality issues and recognize changes within production process; adjust as needed.
  • Perform simple computer tasks to obtain information or troubleshoot.
  • Prioritize work and multitask while adhering to deadlines.
  • Work with minimal supervision in a team environment.
  • Understand and follow all safety policies.

Other Qualifications:

  • Valid driver's license and own vehicle.
  • Availability to work evenings and/or weekends occasionally.
  • Overtime as needed.
  • Local, overnight, and prolonged periods of travel required.
Physical Demands
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs; team lift required for 50 lbs or more.
  • Occasional lifting 100+ lbs.
  • Standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods.
  • Use of vision, hearing, and fine motor skills for inspection and work.
  • Work in moist, humid, and possibly high temperature environments; exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals.
  • Use of PPE such as safety boots, glasses, cut‑resistant gloves, respirator, and face shield.
Working Conditions
  • Wet/humid conditions (non‑weather).
  • Humid conditions (weather‑related).
  • Work near moving mechanical parts.
  • Work in high precarious places.
  • Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold and heat.
