Job summary

CMC in Columbia, SC, is seeking a hands-on operator to join our production team and support the steel, construction reinforcement, and ground stabilization industries.

You will work in a fast-paced environment, operating equipment, ensuring quality, and upholding safety standards while collaborating with teammates to meet daily production goals.

Qualifications

• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
• Stand for long periods and work 12-hour shifts
• Fast-paced environment with safety focus

Responsibilities

• Place bars safely and efficiently in blades
• Learn quality identification and cooling bed operation
• Identify bar quality issues and report to supervisor
• Support rolling mill day-to-day operations
• Monitor furnace temperature and adjust pace
• Participate in safety programs and uphold safety culture
• Complete daily housekeeping and inspections
• Understand start-up/shutdown and emergency procedures
• Troubleshoot problems using job knowledge and communication
• Perform minor maintenance without maintenance personnel

What You’ll Do

• Place the bars in the blades in a safe and efficient manner
• Learn product quality identification, the operation of the cooling bed, and heat separation
• Recognize bar quality issues and communicate them to the shift supervisor
• Support the Rolling Mill crew with day‑to‑day operations
• Monitor reheat furnace temperature and adjust rolling pace accordingly
• Participate in the CMC Safety Programs and proactively uphold the CMC Safety Culture
• Ensure equipment inspection reports are filled out each shift
• Understand start up, shutdown, and emergency procedures
• Responsible for daily housekeeping duties including but not limited to immediate work area
• Ability to troubleshoot work‑related problems using job knowledge, experience, and by communicating with others
• Perform minor/routine maintenance or repairs as needed to equipment without the assistance of maintenance personnel

What You’ll Need

• Ability to work as a team player in a fast‑paced environment with strong work ethic, attention to detail, and organizational skills
• Ability to work with exposure to extremes in temperature, chemical, dust fumes and mists, uneven surfaces, loud noise, elevated work areas, and confined spaces
• Basic computer skills
• Demonstrate dependability in attendance, work completions, and flexibility to meet business needs
• Must be able to learn quickly and multitask
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
• Some overtime will be required
• Must be able to work a 12‑hour shift, which includes overtime, weekends and holidays
• Ability to stand for duration of shift; frequent physical activity such as walking, climbing stairs or reaching to work with equipment throughout the entire shift
• Strong communication skills are required. Must read, speak, and understand English language in verbal and written communication

Your Education

• High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience preferred
