Astera Institute's Robotics Lab in Emeryville, CA, invites applications for an internship focused on wheeled platforms and lifting systems. Under engineering mentorship, you will prototype wheeled mobile bases, test lifting mechanisms, and evaluate performance under realistic conditions.

Starting with hoverboard hub motors and motorized wheels, you will help compare designs, develop simple data collection scripts, and document tradeoffs to guide design choices.

Formación

• Coursework, projects, or practical experience in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, robotics, mechatronics, or a related discipline.
• Experience building and troubleshooting a physical system through coursework, research, student teams, or personal projects.
• Basic familiarity with mechanical assembly, electrical wiring, motors, and sensors.
• Interest in hands‑on prototyping and systematic testing, including careful measurement and documentation.
• Comfort working with an engineering mentor and contributing to the upkeep of a shared robotics lab.

Responsabilidades

• Evaluate wheeled platforms and assemble/modify mobile bases using hoverboard hub motors and wheels.
• Develop repeatable tests to evaluate maneuverability, traction, payload, and power consumption.
• Prototype lifting platforms and integrate actuators, guides, and mounts.
• Evaluate lifting performance, range, speed, and positioning repeatability under defined loads.
• Configure motor controllers, connect feedback, and develop data-collection scripts.
• Document comparisons, maintain CAD files and test records, and summarize tradeoffs.
• Keep experimental hardware ready by organizing components and assisting with setup.
