Job summary

Field AI in Irvine, CA is seeking a Systems Engineer for Large Wheeled Platforms on the Hardware Team. You will bring new platforms into our fleet, integrate control systems, autonomy stack, and payloads, and ensure real-world operation across terrain.

You will collaborate with Autonomy/RL, Manipulation, Mechanical, and Electrical teams to deliver integrated solutions, perform sim-to-real validation, and support field deployments from bring-up to safety qualification.

Qualifications

• BS/MS/PhD in Robotics, CS, or related field.
• 1–5 years of experience.
• Hands-on experience with middleware (ROS/ROS2) and computing languages (Python, C++).
• Robotics software generalist spanning controls, navigation, and systems integration.
• Sim-to-Real experience validating RL or autonomy policies on hardware.
• Cross-functional hardware knowledge: motors, actuation, BLDC motor controllers, power distribution or electrical systems.
• Familiarity with CAN bus, EtherCAT, or similar real-time robotics protocols.
• Systems thinking across mechanical, electrical, controls, and autonomy domains.

Responsibilities

• Platform abstraction: build software layers between each robot's control stack (ROS/ROS2) and Field AI systems.
• Robot controls & navigation: ensure stacks run on physical hardware across quadruped, humanoid, and wheeled platforms.
• Electro-Mechanical integration: work with mechanical/electrical engineers on interfaces and power distributions.
• Sim-to-Real: validate RL-based autonomy from simulation to real-world performance.
• Coordinate across Autonomy/RL, Manipulation, Mechanical, Electrical teams to bring new platforms online.
• Perform SIL/HIL testing for safe, reliable operation and field readiness.
• Identify and integrate new robotic systems; support multi-platform morphologies.
