Job summary

State of South Carolina, Department of Transportation, is seeking a skilled equipment operator to manage diverse roadway maintenance tasks with a CDL-eligible role in Walterboro, SC. The position includes operating dump trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, loaders, and various hand tools, plus traffic control per MUTCD standards.

Responsibilities cover maintenance, pipe laying, drainage work, and emergency response.

Qualifications

• Six months of related work experience or equivalent.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operates medium equipment such as tandem dump truck, belt loader, large roller (>4 tons), and skid steer loader for hauling equipment and materials.
• Operates a motorized street sweeper to sweep and clean roads; operates snow plow and sand spreader during inclement weather.
• Assists in the operation of a backhoe in cleaning ditches and installing sideline and crossline pipes; loads materials needed for maintenance operations.
• Operates and maintains electric, gas-powered and hand tools in various phases of roadway maintenance (e.g. chainsaw, shovel, bush axe, tamp, lute board, weed eaters, drills, wrenches, air compressor).
• Performs manual labor in building catch basins, pouring concrete for curbs, sidewalk, and raised median.
• Lays pipes for driveways and other drainage structures; repairs shoulders, right-of-ways and bridges.
• Assists in setting up and flagging traffic according to MUTCD Standards to control flow of traffic, protect workers, general public and equipment.
• Operates front end loader in loading materials needed for maintenance operations such as earth materials, clay, sand and aggregate.
• Performs pre-operation preventive maintenance inspections on vehicle/equipment as outlined in equipment specifications.
• Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations; may be required to work extended hours or 12-hour shifts; on-call during emergencies.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
