Job summary

Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking a Highway Technician to inspect construction projects in the summer and assist maintenance garages with snow removal operations in the winter. This role supports road safety and operational efficiency across multiple teams.

Residency within 45 minutes of Mason City and a CDL with endorsements within 5 months are required. You will work 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM with potential on-call duties and some overnight travel.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED or equivalent with highway maintenance experience.
• Possess or obtain Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements within 5 months.
• Pre-employment physical, drug screen, and DOT clearance.
• Must reside within 45 minutes driving time of assigned location.
• Willingness to travel and work extended hours during emergencies or winter.

Responsibilities

• Inspect materials for highway construction and perform routine sampling/testing.
• Maintain construction records and inform contractors of quality issues.
• Operate snow equipment to clear roadways in winter.
• Perform routine maintenance/servicing of DOT equipment and vehicles.
• Repair/maintain guardrails, signs, fences, and lighting.
