Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a crew member to support roadway maintenance by operating light to heavy highway equipment, performing preventive maintenance, and conducting manual labor as needed.

The role requires readiness to participate in emergency operations, snow removal, and accident cleanup, along with ensuring work zone safety and adherence to MUTCD guidelines. Applicants should be capable of reading instructions and obtaining a CDL/DOT card within 11 months.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
• Combination of training, experience or education in Maintenance or Vehicle Operations is desired.
• Experience in emergency operations including snow removal, storms and accident cleanup.
• Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
• Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
• Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.

Responsibilities

• Operate light, medium and heavy-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction tasks.
• Prepare equipment for snow and ice removal and emergency operations.
• Provide traffic control and maintain safety at work zones.
• Apply MUTCD guidelines for detours, lane closures and work zones.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.
• Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices and wear required PPE.
