Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking workers for road maintenance, equipment operation and emergency response tasks. You will operate light, medium and heavy highway equipment, perform preventive maintenance and support snow and ice removal operations.

Responsibilities include ensuring site safety per MUTCD, following plans, and maintaining records. Candidates must have CDL, DOT medical card eligibility, and capability for heavy manual labor in a team environment.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy highway equipment and vehicles used for maintenance and construction tasks.
• Support emergency roadway operations including snow removal and accident cleanup; provide traffic control as needed.
• Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques and follow safety rules and MUTCD guidelines for detours and work zones.
• Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment; complete pre-trip inspections.
• Inspect and maintain inventory records related to tools and equipment.
• Work as part of a crew to complete projects and meet objectives.
• Safely operate hand and power tools and use equipment according to safety standards.
• Maintain safe and orderly work areas following VDOT safety practices.
