Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation seeks a versatile Equipment Operator to support roadway maintenance and emergency operations. You will operate light to heavy equipment, perform preventative maintenance, and assist in manual tasks to keep roadways safe and functional.

Responsibilities include snow/ice removal, traffic control per MUTCD, and safety compliance. You will work as part of a crew, handle tools, and comply with OSHA/VOSHA standards at all times.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain light, medium and heavy-duty highway equipment and vehicles.
• Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other emergency operations.
• Install, maintain and remove traffic control devices for work zones per MUTCD.
• Maintain inventory records and complete simple paperwork.
• Wear proper PPE and follow OSHA/VOSHA safety rules and procedures.
• Participate as a crew member to complete projects and perform manual labor as needed.
