Job summary

VDOT in Virginia is seeking a skilled highway maintenance worker to perform equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor on roadway projects. This role requires the ability to work safely, follow directions, and operate a range of light to heavy-duty equipment.

You will participate in emergency road operations, manage traffic control per MUTCD, and support crew objectives with reliable, hands-on maintenance and repair tasks across diverse weather and road conditions.

Qualifications

• Clear communication, both oral and written.
• Ability to read and interpret work plans and specifications.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment.
• Knowledge of OSHA/VOSHA safety requirements and job-site safety practices.
• Familiarity with MUTCD traffic control and work zone safety.
• Skill in using hand and power tools.
• Experience operating light, medium and heavy equipment for maintenance and repair.
• Strong teamwork and adherence to safety procedures.
• Knowledge of work zone traffic control standards.
• Ability to wear safety footwear and PPE as required.

Responsibilities

• Emergency Operations: Operate and maintain light and medium-duty equipment for maintenance and construction tasks.
• Emergency Operations: Prepare and operate equipment for snow/ice removal and other emergencies; clear roadways and provide traffic control.
• Equipment Operations: Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy highway equipment for maintenance and construction tasks.
• Job Safety: Apply proper work site protection techniques and PPE; maintain safe work environment.
• Manual Labor: Work as a crew member to complete projects and tasks.
• Preventive Maintenance: Perform maintenance, repair, and inspections on vehicles and equipment.
• Traffic Control Devices: Install, maintain, and remove traffic control devices per MUTCD; track inventory and records.
