Job summary

Black Hawk County (IA) seeks a road maintenance worker who operates trucks and equipment to keep county roads in good condition. The role involves heavy manual labor, loading materials, snow removal, and basic construction tasks under supervision of the Road Superintendent.

Expect to meet residency requirements, hold a valid Iowa CDL Type A (Tank endorsement preferred) and pass reading and safety standards. This is a full-time, on-site position with varied weather conditions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules and manuals.
• Six months or more related experience and/or training required.
• Must have Iowa CDL Type A and be insurable under county guidelines.
• Tank endorsement or ability to obtain within six months.

Responsibilities

• Drive and operate County trucks and equipment to maintain roads.
• Load, transport, and dump loose materials like sand, gravel, or asphalt.
• Sweep dirt from pavement to prepare surfaces for repairs.
• Operate air compressor and jackhammer for pavement and rock breaking.
• Spread asphalt and patch work areas; perform road resurfacing as needed.
• Erect and maintain road signs and barricades; perform routine equipment inspections.
• Load materials by hand or using loader; assist in snow removal as required.
• Participate in concrete forming and finishing for bridges and culverts when needed.
• Follow safety procedures and minimize risks to personnel and equipment.
