Job summary

Black Hawk County seeks a minimally supervised laborer to maintain county roads, operating trucks and equipment, including dump trucks, and performing manual tasks in road construction and repair projects.

The role requires snow removal, barrier setup, and safety-focused work while adhering to county procedures. Residency within 45 minutes of the Longfellow shop in Waterloo is required.

Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma or GED.
• Experience with manual labor and operation of road-related equipment is preferred.
• Ability to read safety rules, instructions, and procedures.
• Must hold Iowa CDL Type A and obtain Tanker Endorsement within six months.

Responsibilities

• Operate truck and equipment to maintain county roads.
• Drive dump truck; transport and dump loose materials.
• Perform pavement work including spreading asphalt and patching.
• Erect/maintain road signs and barricades; assist with traffic controls.
• Load materials by hand or with machinery; perform related labor duties.
• Follow safety procedures and inspect equipment for safety.

Job description

Minimally supervised; performs heavy manual labor; drives truck and operates other equipment to maintain County roads; drives truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials such as sand, gravel, crushed rock, coal, or bituminous paving materials, concrete finishing and concrete forming.

• Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location in order to perform assigned tasks.
• Sweeps loose dirt from pavement to prepare for laying surface
• Operates air compressor and jackhammer to break up pavement and rocks
• Spreads asphalt over surface and tamps in patches
• Erects and maintains roads signs. Erects and dismantles barricades.
• Operates County equipment as necessary including hand and power tools.
• Drives farm-type tractor with mower attachment to cut grass and weeds
• Performs snow removal
• Moves hand and foot controls to jerk truck forward and backward to loosen and dump material adhering to body
• Loads truck by hand or by operating mechanical loader
• Performs a variety of manual labor and other duties as directed including construction forming steel and concrete placement and finishing concrete for bridges and culvert construction.
• Follows proper safety procedures and takes pro-active measures to avoid potential harm to equipment and personnel.
• Performs routine inspections of equipment to ensure safety and operability.
• Other duties as assigned
• Supervision is received from Road Superintendent and Road Supervisor.
• No Functional or administrative supervision is exercised over support staff.

• Must meet Secondary Roads residency requirements within 6 months of hire date: reside within a 45-minute response time, in normal fair weather driving conditions, from the Longfellow shop, located at 1329 Longfellow Ave, Waterloo.
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
• Six (6) months or more related experience and/or training required.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Must have and maintain a valid Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Type A and be insurable under the County's guidelines.
• Must have valid Iowa CDL Type A - Tanker Endorsement or able to obtain the endorsement within six (6) months from date of hire.
• The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
