Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation seeks a capable crew leader to perform skilled equipment operation, preventive maintenance and manual labor across highway maintenance tasks. You will lead and train crew members, enforce safety, oversee traffic control and ensure efficient, safe execution of daily assignments.

Frontline duties include snow/ice response, equipment inspections, work-zone management and data recording for reporting and budgeting.

Qualifications

• Ability to interpret and apply work zone safety and traffic control manuals.
• Ability to lead, direct, oversee the work of others and train others.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor and use hand and power tools.
• Basic knowledge of inventory procedures.
• Experience in roadway maintenance activities and operations.

Responsibilities

• Emergency Operations: Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other emergency operations.
• Equipment Operation: Operate, maintain and repair equipment; perform pre‑trip inspections.
• Job Safety: Enforce safety rules and ensure proper PPE and safe work sites.
• Leadership: Train crew, provide feedback, and assist in administrative tasks.
• Manual Labor: Perform hands‑on maintenance tasks and assist in project completion.
• Provide Leadership in Traffic Control: Plan and manage placement of traffic control devices per MUTCD.
• Records Preparation and Management: Prepare program documentation and budget-related records.
• Schedule and Perform Work: Assign tasks, review work and provide input on performance.
• Traffic Control: Install/remove signs and flag traffic to ensure safe work zones.
• Worker Productivity: Document daily activities and review contractor performance.
