Position Information

TxDOT's Atlanta District is looking for a Roadway (Transportation) Maintenance Crew Chief in our Marshall, TX Maintenance Section. As a crew chief, you will coordinate equipment, materials, and personnel for roadway maintenance projects and work closely with the maintenance section supervisor. Experience gained in this position can provide opportunities for advancement within the department.

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

  • Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments, serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.
  • Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put-up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  • Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience:

5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

  • Must have "N" CDL Endorsement or obtain within 90 days of employment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Class "A" CDL with "N" Endorsement

Knowledge of

  • Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering, construction, and maintenance work
  • Design, testing, and quality control of materials used in the construction and maintenance of highways and related structures
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Incident management procedures

Skill in

  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Maintaining a safe work environment

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
