Job summary

Texas Department of Transportation in Abilene, TX is seeking a Highway Maintenance Crew Chief to lead a team of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators. The role requires strong leadership, strong adherence to safety, and the ability to manage crews across multiple sites.

The ideal candidate will have 5 years in roadway maintenance, a valid Class A CDL with N endorsement, and a proven track record in equipment operation.

Qualifications

• High School Grad or Equivalent is required.
• 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work; substitutions possible with college ed or training.
• Must have a Class "A" CDL with an N endorsement and no restriction; required to drive a state vehicle for TxDOT.

Responsibilities

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance
activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires
responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level
perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

The essential duties for the Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief include:

• Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs.
  
• Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  
• Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  
• Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  
• Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  
• Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
  
• Operates light and heavy equipment.
  
• Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
  
• Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  
• Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
  
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience:

5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

• Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application with an N endorsement, and with no restriction - This position requires you to drive a state vehicle for TxDOT.

Preferred Qualifications: The required competencies for the Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief include: Extensive knowledge of:

• Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  
• The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Device.

Considerable knowledge of:

• Design, testing and quality control of materials used in the construction and maintenance of highways and related structures
  
• Incident management procedures
  
• Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
• Operating light and heavy highway equipment
• Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations
  
• Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others

The physical requirements and working conditions for the Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief include:
