Job summary

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Indianapolis Sub-Unit seeks a Bridge Maintenance Specialist and related roles to support highway maintenance, testing, and construction oversight. The position emphasizes CDL eligibility, safety compliance, and the ability to manage field crews across diverse tasks.

The role includes inspecting bridges and roads, operating maintenance equipment, and coordinating with contractors, with a focus on quality and adherence to INDOT specifications.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one within 90 days of employment.
• Pass and submit to a drug test as a condition of employment.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local highway guidelines, laws and regulations, principles, and practices for construction inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of highway.
• Knowledge of drafting and surveying techniques.
• Ability to independently lead and coordinate the work of a crew in the field.
• Ability to read, interpret and follow technical documents.
• Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather.
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
• Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods of time.

Responsibilities

• Comply with INDOT safety policies and procedures.
• Operate highway maintenance/traffic equipment to maintain and repair highways.
• Ensure staff complete work assignments and report problems.
• Communicate with contractors to ensure procedures meet standards.
• Perform winter operations including snow and ice removal.
• Conduct routine equipment maintenance and pre-trip inspections.
• Maintain, repair, and install traffic signs and road markings.
• Perform emergency response activities such as traffic control and barricades.
• Attend worksite as assigned.
