Job summary

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) in Mercer County is hiring a CDL Operator Trainee for a six-month program. You will train on heavy trucks and equipment, assist with daily maintenance tasks, and learn safety procedures to support highway and bridge operations.

This role prepares you for licensing and certification while contributing to safe travel conditions. Work hours are 7:00 AM–3:00 PM, Monday–Friday, with travel and overtime as required.

Qualifications

• Active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver's license.
• Active Pennsylvania Class A or B CDL Learner's Permit on day one of work.
• Active Medical Examiner’s Certificate per FMCSA regulations by day one.
• Drug and Alcohol testing is required.
• Must be able to perform essential job functions.

Responsibilities

• Equipment Training: learn to operate heavy trucks and other construction equipment.
• Manual Labor: perform tasks with shovels, rakes, and patching tools.
• Safety Practices: follow procedures, report hazards, maintain safe environment.
• Field Awareness: stay alert to risks and assist with safe operations.
• Environmental Duties: follow environmental requirements during maintenance.
